Our magical golems should be immune to magic, like the ones from old roguelikes. Except forms which deal purely destructive physical damage, of course. And we should make them out of tempered metal. The more joints the more dexterous and more capable of performing complex tasks, and the lighter their parts the faster they'd move, but of course the heavier and less jointed the more resistant to damage.

Now, how should they be animated? Should they use human sacrifices? Can we put a hex on persons that would drain their energy and feed it to the golem (a mysterious plague!), which would render the golem's energy vulnerable only to the destruction of the hex object?

Gods, the possibilties! Think about it: A Trap. If someone enters he animates a golem, fueled by the trespassers lifeforce... And the only way for the trespasser to kill it is to commit suicide.

And the only goal the golem has is to kill the trespasser! Hooray!

But let's start with the basics. Let's make a simply-jointed quadruped model and try to animate it.

Alak! Your have spells for turning men into frogs, frogs into snakes, snakes into mice, and mice into pumpkins, but no spell you know stops halfway.
Buy/Capture some mice or frogs. Perform the relevant transformation spell, but do all of the stages if half (it is says to stir four times, stir twice. If it says to use six units of X, use three).

I just got some ideas:

 - try killing a man in the procces of being turned into a frog to get frogman.
 - try to despell a man turned into a frog after putting it into a sealed reinforced mettal container smaller than the volume of a man.

People for use as research subjects can be rather hard to come across, hence doing it with other animals to see if the theory works.
