Read through books on SCIENCE! and see if any experiments come to mind purely for the purpose of getting a better understanding of SCIENCE!
I.e. practise, raise our SCIENCE! skills.
You are a Gentlemanne of Natural Philosophie, not a Lv. 13 Human Arcane Scientist. You do not practice for the sake of practice. Think up some real science. It's not like you've reached the limits of your capabilities.

Research warding spells to protect our house or something? If this is too much like magic shields and invoke our RAEG then research how magic shields work before researching any specefic magic shields and/or warding spells.
Almost a quarter of your known spells are personal property protection. However, each one covers only part of the wide range of misfortunes that can befall a house. What specifically are you looking for?

Look up spells for fusing creatures.
Alak! Your have spells for turning men into frogs, frogs into snakes, snakes into mice, and mice into pumpkins, but no spell you know stops halfway.

In other words, lets develop a steam-powered printing press. With it, we can produce a large library, claiming to have purchased said books and thereby attracting like-minded bookworms to our cause. Eventually, as we gain their trust, we could introduce them to our brilliant invention and exchange the printing of books in exchange for a copy of said book.
A printing press? Well, the theory is easy to understand, and you could certainly design and build one, but it would take a long time, and its operation would take a lot of work. To produce a collection of books rivalling or even equalling a small library would take years alone. If you want a book printed, there are small printing presses all over the place which will do it for you, and if you write it in some foreign language, they will not know what it is about.

There's no point in a printing press. It is for mass production; if you want to record something then it is much faster to write it yourself or with a secretary than to set type.

Very well! Examine our Alchemy book and then start experiments with the chemical reactions that the book doesn't talk about. Be cautious and do it in the shack.

Pretty much everything you with your limited resources is listed in the book already. You don't have most of the more exotic ingredients, although some of your magical reagents are also Alchemical substances.

I have absolutely no idea what's going on in this fort any more. Migrants arrive, they die for some reason, the fort is flooded for another reason, then dwarves go mad, more dwarves die and I'm just laughing in my distress.

Look into remote vision spells, something that lets us see stuff trough something, like a crystal, then install said device into a rooster wind pointer(it's not called like that, but you know, a metal rooster on top of a tallish structure that points the direction of the wind), and install said device in the village :D

Buy/Capture some mice or frogs. Perform the relevant transformation spell, but do all of the stages if half (it is says to stir four times, stir twice. If it says to use 6 units of X, use three).

Well, the purpose of the printing press was not for our own use, but for the use of whichever establishment we decide to patronize.

Any true scientists wants their knowledge divulged to the masses.

Also, it'll be an accomplishment that can help us in other matters of mass production.

I'll agree we should steer clear of book production. Let others take care of that, and we will take care of the science and magic behind it, introducing such concepts as the "Thousand Monkey Bookwriter".

Your Tome of Spells does not list any form of summoning within it's pages. A perusal of your Tome of Etheric Guidelines reminds you that (how could you forget) summoning ethereal creatures is the realm of Incorporeal Creatures and their study. Haha! You serve a more noble cause; rather than using magic blindly, you work out where its power comes from, and how it works, then take that knowledge, and apply it. You would be better off divining how an imp works, and then simulating one, without the unfortunate side effects of mischievous destruction, stupid laughter, and the stench of brimstone.

Why have we not done this yet? Find a spell that can move stuff at a distance or even better summon a invisible servant.

Attempt to create a variation on the Spontaneously Combusting Goop which burns at a controlled rate as chemical A is mixed into chemical B. Wonder to yourself if it is possible to create these two chemicals in large batches.

Let's try to animate toys/figurines and gradually give them some form of magical intelligence. I imagine this could be a decent first step towards understanding how to imitate imps and the like, and would allow us to eventually create semi-intelligent golems which could do some tasks for us. We could animate a stuffed bird and have it keep lookout for us, etc etc.

When we get really good at it we can create a magical army of golems (with some backup in case they have a way of cancelling a form of magic) and call the institute over.
