Then how can we make better fuel...

hmm...

Experimentation! With SCIENCE!!!

(Perhaps we should focus on increasing our skill level in SCIENCE, so we know what we're actually doing.)
Yeah, why don't we try to make chemicals that induce sleep or something?

I thought we gathered the phlogiston for the specific purpose of trying to find a reagant that might replace frogman ash.

Okay, what if we enchant the phlogiston or something?

I think we should try using it as it is before we try using an enchanted version.

Okay. But what, do we design a machine that'll use the pholgywillynilly shit as fuel? It's totally different from a coal engine...

Given that it took several hours just to obtain one vial, I don't think it would make a better fuel than coal unless it's very potent.

It was meant to be a step towards making frogman ash, but since it is only one component and we don't have a clue about the others...

More research is needed on the frogman ash, or we need to find information on it elsewhere.

Okay, so we should see if we can't get any treatises on magical creatures.

This. And it should be easy to claim we're just looking for a good story to read, not SCIENCE.

We have alot of phlogiston experiments to do. Proper SCIENCE!

Test One: Mix a little of the the phlogiston with the following:
-Coal
-Water
-Frog
-Frog Ashes (use different frog)
-Human Hair Ashes
-Mixed Frog and Human Hair Ashes

Test Two: Combustion testing. Test the following, as produced in Test One:
-Supercoal
-Phlogisticated water
-Highly Flammable Frog
-Various Mixtures of Phlogisticated Frog and Human Ash.

Test Three: Design and construct a steam powered device which will burn coal and use the power to extract phlogiston from the phlogisticated air which is released from the burning coal.

Test Four: Consider how much phlogiston is created using your steam-powered dephlogisticator. Can it supliment the device? Can it fuel it? Make it work and then have phlogiston left over?

This would be chemically/physically impossible...?

Nothing can fuel itself and then some, or it would be an infinite source of energy ??? (Unless etheric science creates loopholes in the laws of thermodynamics).

We've determined that it does. But it could end the world.

Not necessarily scientifically impossible, if we accept that we are drawing in a source of energy not in this dimension (i.e. magic and phlogiston). That way, it's just energy entering this world. Probably from the bowels of hell, but who cares? It's for SCIENCE!

(Real world application: Refinery. An outside source (raw petroleum) is added to the system, which generates petroleum and further fuels the process used to generate petroleum. Same concept, except our raw petroleum is magic!)

Don't forget that we still have to burn something with the phsowhatsit, in reality it is not breaking the laws of thermodynamics but pushing the efficiency way way up

well thAN we test this out

I realized we're going about exploiting phlogiston form the wrong direction:
