Though in due time we will claim our revenge on the acurfed Inftitute, before such a time comef to paff, we muft remain of a low profile. At the same time, we muft seek to improve the profperity of our small village, af they are our backbone, and their wellbeing directly correlatef to our burdgeoning power. Af such, bringing the stength of Steamwork to their induftry will be a priority... but first, we muft devife a way to hide our workf from outfide forcef.

I humbly propofe that we make ufe of our Ethericf, to design an illusory alteration of memory and senfef, to difguife our workf, and thereby improve the production of our village, while keeping the Inftitute and itf drones none-the-wifer. A Glamour of Forgetfulneff would hide the Steam Enginef which would provide the townfpeople with increafed productivity and wealth, such af the propofed Steam-Mill.

Anyone who seef, hearf, or otherwife learnf of the presence of the device which the Glamour is put over will forget, having their memory replaced with something inconfpicuouf, like a pack-mule pufhing the vertical axle. By the same token, the villager supplying coal for the Steam-Mill would think they were merely pouring oatf in a bin for thif illufory "Mule". I propofe that we name thif Glamour of Forgetfulneff, and the illufory "Mule" that acompanief it the "Senfory Alteration: Lifelike", or SAL.

Oh so very much do I want a magic that makes its target appear as a mule!

Inspector looks at the bookshelf - sees four mules sitting, legs dangling, braying at each other and reading newspapers. Thinks nothing of it. :D

Hide our sciencey stuff, buy some farms, start a vegetable patch, build a shack, write back stating how we will follow the person's advice and go into agriculture, consider ways to make a early warning surveillance system thingy that will warn us of intruders.

Shack and farms optional, also the idea for forging harmless little toys etc. in the forge is a good one.

I have absolutely no idea what's going on in this fort any more. Migrants arrive, they die for some reason, the fort is flooded for another reason, then dwarves go mad, more dwarves die and I'm just laughing in my distress.

Hide our sciencey stuff,
You pack up your equipment and put it back where it came from (loose floorboards, fake bottomed chests, revolving bookcases, ect)
buy some farms,
You head down to the village and invest in Young William's potato farm for £100. After some discussion William hands you a piece of paper that says you half own his farm.
write back stating how we will follow the person's advice and go into agriculture,
You send a reply to your friend, leaving the letter with the villagers to be put in the mail at the next opportunity.
start a vegetable patch, build a shack,
You buy some seeds and building materials from the villagers. You then head home, and work at turning part of your garden into a vegetable patch. Once you have completed that you build a small shack out in the woods (using pieces of an old garden shed, of which you have plenty), where it will not be stumbled upon, and move your steam engine and (unfinished!) pump into it.
consider ways to make a early warning surveillance system thingy that will warn us of intruders.
Satisfied that there is nothing here to give you away, you start thinking about some sort of early warning system.
...
You've got it:
Get the villagers to stall the Inspector and have one of them run up and tell you he's there.
Genius, have it you do.
also the idea for forging harmless little toys etc. in the forge is a good one.
You make a set of fireplace ironwork in the forge. (poker, tongs, coal shovel and bucket)

If the Inspector is to be exactly on time, you still have three days before they arrive.

It is 24 days since you returned home. It is evening.

How large is the steam engine/water pump?
Not very big; too big for one man carry. Two people could carry the pump, three the engine. (You can lift both using the power of SCIENCE/Wheelbarrows)

If it's not too expensive, buy a large bell and several lengths of rope/string. Hook these up so people who walk along the paths near the house set off a tripwire, which sounds the bell

Opening your magic tome, research the following:

>Linking two objects together, so actions on one affect the other
>If it's not too expensive, buy a large bell and several lengths of rope/string. Hook these up so people who walk along the paths near the house set off a tripwire, which sounds the bell

Great idea.

This should be done.

make sure the actual tripwire bit is as concealed and unnoticeable as possible.

No research until the inspector gets here. Instead, go down to the village and inquire about purchasing a chicken coop and having it installed on your estate. This looks perfectly innocuous, but will actually provide us with free test subjects without ever arousing suspicion.
