Complete the fertility spell, then find a way to remove the need for ammunition in the gun. A gun that fires pain... interesting, we can incapacitate but not kill using it.
You take the list of ingredients and head off into the forest. You find all the herbs you need within a few hours, and store them in the cellar. But you still need that animal sacrifice.

The next day you dive back into your Tome of Guidelines and find a way to remove the need for ammunition. The casting time will be increased by an hour, and you will need a piece of bone to the list of ingredients. Are you sure you want to make these changes?

I have absolutely no idea what's going on in this fort any more. Migrants arrive, they die for some reason, the fort is flooded for another reason, then dwarves go mad, more dwarves die and I'm just laughing in my distress.

The pain gun has to have a lever for varying its power, and its maximum should be '50'.

You nod your head in satisfaction. Brilliant! This weapon will make your enemies suffer! You copy the design into your official Designs Book.

Now... a steam engine. Firebox here, boiler here, valves here and here, maximum pressure over this area... carry the one...
It takes six days of work, at the end of which you have a design for a medium-sized steam engine that should work. It requires:
-10 pieces of plumbing (you have enough)
-1 boiler (ditto)
-some gears and pistons (ditto)
-two square meters of metal sheeting (you can probably find some somewhere in this house)
-1 big wheel (ditto)
-4 days of crafting&forging

Now then... a water pump that can be operated by this thing. No problem!
Two days work later, you have the design for your pump. It will pump water up out of your well at a decent rate. With the addition of a crank, it could be operated manually. It requires:
-25 pieces of plumbing (you have enough)
-some gears and pistons
-A water container (you can take a rainwater tank off the roof, or use barrels from the cellar)
-2 days of crafting&forging

You try to think of some way of improving the fuel for your steam engine...
Unless you are willing to spend a significant amount of time doing trial or error tests, plain old coal is the best you can come up with.



It is 10 days since you returned home. It is evening.

I agree with this. Also, how about starting to have a small tax incease for the village after doing something good for them like that pump idea? Anyway what is in the village? Markets?, inns? that sort of stuff.

AUGH! Dont do steam designing that take days and weeks withoute picking all that low-hanging etheric fruit first!!

Actualy, GM, I think there shuld be some sort of limit so a single player can NOT waste weeks overnight, maybe anything that takes more than 24 hours shuld reuire MUCH more players suporting it than something that takes just a few hours, hm?

Now: MAKE THAT AMMOLESS PAINGUN! Then test to see how it preforms (rate of fire, range, accuracy, and most importnantly the amount of pain induced!)

Now for my reason for this post: OMG magic shelds! Read up on those, and figure out how to make them any shape and postion you want! Those things are basicaly forcefelds. most importnantly, if they can act like normal physical objects, using them instead of mettal in mechanical contraptions would let thos RECONFIGURE AND ADAPT THEMSELVES ON THE FLY!
This, is a Jackpot.

Read up on triger conditions! We have the gun, so we know the movment of a physical object can triger magic, and do it repeatedly! Try to find magic that can triger oter magic, and magic that act like logic gates, or even magic that can directly tap or emulate into souls and intelegence!


Also, complet that fetility ritual

You head down to the village, following the road through the forest. The villagers nod their heads in respect as you pass.
You enter the tavern that serves as the center of government. By this time villagers have ran ahead, and the innkeeper guides you to a table that has been set up with -real cloth, see, and that silver cutlery, your grandpa gave us them, sir, kind man he was, kind man indeed, there was no call for what they did to him, could have happened to anybody, sir, if you ask me they had it coming, going around in clothes like that, t'was a disgrace is what it was, he did the world a favour really, they had no call to have him dance upon the zephyr, sir, not at all- with promises of their finest meal to come. 

You eat well, then address the assembled villagers. Whether they could spare a live chicken for the purposes of your experiments, and if they would favour the installation of an Automated Steam-Pumpe?
The villagers look at each other nervously. There is a huddle. After a few minutes a spokesman is pushed forwards.
"I- that is, we- would be most honoured if sir were to test his inventions in our humble village, sir, and I- we, feel that a single chicken would not be missed at all, although, um, yes, nevermind, a chicken. Yes."
He coughs.
"Yes."
You thank him.

You have not built the pump yet!
The village is made up of a few houses, a tavern, a blacksmith, a butcher, and a tanner. The villagers are farmers and hunters. The farming is not very good in these hills, just enough to feed the inhabitants of the village. They make their money from hunting the wildlife in your estate, selling smoked meat and leather in a nearby town.

A villager hands you a confused chicken in a wicker cage. It looks very healthy.
You head back home, and begin preparing the fertility ritual. You spend three hours mixing herbs together in an eye-rollingly theatrical manner (honestly how does the direction of the stirring matter). It is late at night when you finish the preparations, but late at night strikes you as an excellent time to do this.
You take the chicken (werk?), the herbal mix, and a small knife, and head off into the forest. Coming across a moonlit clearing which, you reckon, is not to far from the village, you set up the spell. The herbal mix is spread in a circle, with a small dollop fed to the chicken. The chicken is held up to the sky whilst archaic words are chanted. A swooping dance is danced (all whilst holding the increasingly bewildered chicken). At its climax, the chicken is placed in the center of the circle, and the knife plunged into its plumage.
The chicken and the circle erupt a pure white light into the skies whilst you shield your eyes. A final three syllables completes the spell, and the light dies down. You cut off one of the beasts feet for later use, then leave the scene, trying to shake off the feeling that you have betrayed proper science.

((Woah, relax. This is just the begining; once shit gets real, then yes, a 'seconding' will be required for serious actions. I just think that to get us warmed up, things should be done quickly))

You sleep in the next day, exhausted both mentally and physically. Then you set about building your 'pain gun'. It takes you the rest of the day, but it is an admirable piece of work.

Spend significant time dissecting that fertility spell. Catch a couple bugs. See if it can be cast over a much smaller area. Cast several fertility spells with slightly different components and actions in various spots of your garden.

Basically, this may be magic, but we are SCIENTISTS, and as such, we WILL discover the science that makes this spell work, and rip away all that superficial claptrap!

Agreed. Also try to determine the effect of the magic words. They call forth power, but how, and where does it come from?

Armok: Really, there's no need to be worried about time right now. We are self-sufficient, and there is absolutely nothing time-dependent going on right now.

Get over the feeling of having 'betrayed proper science'.
