What OS do you play Dwarf Fortress on?
« on: May 03, 2010, 06:47:58 am »

I am interested in just how many Dwarf players are running DF on anything other than windows. Especially considering that latest versions are not yet (at all?) released for *nix systems, and WINE gives quite a performance hit.

This topic is not about OS flamewars, so please keep that down :)

I didn't notice any major performance hit on WINE. On lucky days, i even reach 100 FPS at my 125-dorf fort (while half of them are idle).

Personally WINE hits DF quite badly for me. It takes AGES to load maps, and the game sometimes simply halts, while the windows version works OK. (running in VM though I do not get much performance either)

I use Vista and XP.

I would use the linux version to play while in the university computer labs, but then I'd never get any work done.  :-\

Linux. Arch, to be specific.

I thought performance would be terrible on my AAO, but I can get upwards of 20 fps. Believe me, that's good considering the OpenGL stuff isn't merged yet and weather/temp are still on.

Windows 7 64-bit.

Also, I think we all had the feeling that Linux users would be represented a lot more than they usual does, but 25% is still pretty impressive :o

Why only two choices? I play on Mac, Linux and Windows.

Maybe you should split the windows one into XP, Vista and WIndows 7?

I use Windows 7 myself.

I'm not sure how much of a performance hit wine is, but it runs at 100+ FPS from embark, and that's good enough for me. Even after breaching the low parts of the map, I can see FPS around 30-40 with a fort of 80-100 dwarves. I can't use any graphical tilesets because they bog down the whole thing to a sea of glue right from the beginning.

The native Linux build has another advantage over the wine stuff - The OpenGL engine will enable fast graphical tileset rendering and enhance FPS in the normal modes to boot. This should be a very noticeable difference in Windows as well.

I run it on Mac. I tried the new dorf 31.01 under VM and it was unplayable on my box.

There isn't a mac compatible version just yet, I think there will be one with the merge though.

WINE really isn't that different from a performance standpoint. When using Baughn's accelerator, I'm getting 38-40 FPS in WINE on Mac, and 39-41 FPS on Windows 7. The difference is negligible.
