Assigning animals to squads?

I've noticed people mention that they assign war animals to soldiers and/or squads.  How do you do this?

Query a dwarf with 'v', then 'p' for preferences and 'e' for work dogs. Not sure if it works for other animals?

You can't assign animals to squads unfortunately... only to individual dwarves.
