Hero Core, from Iji creator Daniel Remar!
« on: May 03, 2010, 03:13:46 am »

The title should be all you need to know:

http://www.remar.se/daniel/herocore.php

Trailer is here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cu_xdCHdSqg

It's a pretty simple distillation of metroidvania/shooter, with a very healthy dose of retro.  Challenging and fun bosses, but it's very non-punishing (in normal, at least).  Non-punishing as in "Oh, you blew up the generator and then you died?  Well, it stays blown up, so good for you".  I got 100% on the first mode in about an hour, plus there's hard difficulty (with enemies that behave differently, and a totally new map) and ultimate difficulty (with yet another new sidestory map...and let's just say, Iji fans will appreciate it).  So even if you only have a couple hours left in your evening, go play!

(And if you haven't played Iji, well.  Iji thread is here but you do not want spoilers, trust me.  It's a totally different game, side shooter, in a vaguely "Out Of This World" art style.  Iji is pretty notable in that your character starts out as a freaked-out pacifist...and, uh, where she goes from there depends entirely on what your personal approach to people trying to kill you is.  Have fun, tears will be shed.  And Iji has a glorious soundtrack.  Did I mention I like Iji?  Keep Iji stuff in the Iji thread, but you should totally go play that.  And this.)

PS:  If anyone figures out how to do that circle attack at 0:49 in the trailer, or a similar one that fires in a quarter-circle left-to-top arc, post how you did it?  I've done both a couple times and I can't for the life of me figure out how.

Iji was great. I'll try this out when I have a moment.

Just beat it on Normal. The last few bosses are damn hard.

I managed to beat this guy, and some others, but forgot to take the game out of my auto-cleaning downloads folder, so I lost my save, silly me... It's much better than the first Hero, which I also find really cool. Levels are nicely put together with all those sliding parts and whatnot, and the bosses are fun too. The idea of having to go into the boss to smash its four cores and then escape before he closes up is nice one.

Man... stupid eliminator! Why must you attack me in rooms where you can't get close enough for me to kill you! You made me get 95% completion!

In other news. That circle attack is in a semi-hidden room. (It's shown on your map) and you need the Level 3 barrier thing to get to it. (At least on normal mode) You can actually do it without finding the item that tells you how, but where's the fun in me just telling you. ;P

There's also another semi-hidden item that let's you do some other amusing things, but isn't actually useful. (*Flies upside down, wheeeeeee*)

semi-hidden room. (It's shown on your map)

I can't believe I didn't see that earlier.  I never really went back after getting 100% on normal and beating the boss, though, so...

I did find a hidden room that's only shown on the bonus map or when you find it, it's not listed as undiscovered.  That was neat.

Edit:  Interestingly, missing out on a room doesn't cost you a dot on your savefile.  Also, there's no way my hard mode game is going to get 100%, because of that locked-door room in the Annihilator Factory with the annihilator + other critter.  I can kill one annihilator, I can kill two annihilators, I can probably take on the final boss, but one plus a crazy thing that spawns other monsters and has a different shot pattern?  Yow.

Yeah.  That was... a "Fun" room to get past.  Worst part about it was the save placement.  It's not that hard to get to the room with the annihilator and the hunter without taking more than one hit (and that hit is avoidable too, I just never got the timing memorized).  What I did was play really aggressively and killed the hunter before the first MPFB salvo.  After that it was just a fight against an annihilator in an awkward sized room.  Now it's just time for me to learn Tetron's hard pattern and then he'll go down as well.

EDIT:  Tetron is now defeated on both difficulties.  The hard map looks terrible compared to the normal map, oh well.  I've also seen the (extremely boring) secret room in the hard map.  Anyone know how to get to the normal map secret room?

Yeah, the secret room in normal mode is accessible:

Okay, I've beaten the first three difficulty modes now at 100%.  The fourth looks a little out of my league, though:

Also...Oh man, Hero Forever has Wallmasters.  And you can turn your gun all the way up to X.

well, I've gotten 100% on both Normal and Hard (or the "Normal" story mode, both difficulties). Now to do the Secondary Story... JESUS CHRIST I HAVE NEVER BEEN RAPED SO BADLY BY A BOSS IN THIS GAME.

also, language to retro set for fun much.

Wow. I imagine someone will beat the secret mode one day.

I'm poking at it to see if a tool-assisted victory would be possible, with 100% perfect dodging and the ability to waste no shots.

I'm pretty sure that it's not possible, for exactly one reason:

THAT GODDAMN REAVER DRONE, MY PERSONAL NEMESIS.  That's way too much heatseeking garbage to dodge, even if you have perfect reflexes and precognition.  The other bosses' bodies don't give you enough physical space to kite its drones without taking contact damage.  I'm predicting that a tool-assisted bot could make it to the third wave of Reaver Drones without taking damage, but when the second wave went heatseeking, there would be nowhere to dodge.

...I'm going to try and hack memory to get infinite HP, no damage cooldown, and the hyper gun though.  >.> WHAT'S BEHIND THE DOOOOOOOOOOR

*jaw drops*

...Okay, I had to try editing it to see what would happen, and nothing special besides "savefile corrupt, press continue to create a new one" :(

I haven't tried editing it, but can it still load the old one if you made a backup? It could use the windows registry to easily permanently disable that save...

Yeah, it can still load the old one.  I swapped a 6 for a 5 in the savefile, tried to load it and got a fail, then swapped that number back and it loaded fine.

...I'm now trying Cheat Engine on the game in hopes of beating the impossible difficulty level, and I'm discovering that either memory hacking on the PC is WAY harder than on consoles...or that Danial Remar took some pretty extraordinary measures to prevent cheating.  I'm guessing the second option is more likely.  It seems that your hit points cycle through at least four variables along with some other data, trying to change them doesn't work, and freezing the variables causes the game to report an "unexpected error" and harf.
