Well, I do have some already implemented for the next version of Direforged:

Demon's hand: A red mushroom with fingerlike growths. It is only found in the deepest caverns, is edible raw, and can be brewed into dark wine.

Eyestalk colony: a colony of underground mushrooms resembling eyes on stalks. The mushrooms themselves can be processed into bags and eaten, and the colony can be processed into barrels, creating a valuable substance called ocular essence.

Frozenfire bush: A bush growing in the deep caverns. It can be milled into flamedye, a crimson dye, or processed into incense of flame at the Halls of Flame.

Blood tubes: An underground tree with unusable wood, filled with a blood-like substance.

Not exactly an underground plant, but related to dwarves:

Coalhollow: A bamboo-like plant that can be ground into coal dye, a slate gray dye, or smoked in the kitchen to produce coaltubes, which then can be brewed into coalbrew. Consumption by nondwarves is not recommended (though currently harmless).

My contribution is art!   :D   I'm working on a new tileset.
And it's gonna do wonders for underground plant mods like this.

The official Ironhand Graphics set will feature multi-colored tiles!
You can choose one color for the plant (or fungus) itself,
and a different one for the spots, or flowers, or berries!

It's incredibly fun. Check out some examples:

Every tile presents almost 200 possibilities of color combinations!

I'll be releasing a test version when the merge happens.

Ooh!  I see we have the same idea.  An alcohol that can be sold to elves (and maybe humans) to poison them off.   :D

Those look lovely, but I'm still an ASCII guy.  At least until someone makes tiles for the cavepigs I stole from someone else.

Oh man! I can't wait for your set to come out. I will probably tweak a few tiles (as I usually do) but your tiles for plants/stone textures are too lovely to ignore! I want them so much :P.

Working on a plant that produces Mithril thread, that can be smelted into Mithril, that's slightly better than steel.

Heh, not quite. It isn't deadly, but it might be nasty enough that the traders would stay away if they were smart enough to assess their goods beyond its value (and not nasty enough to be grounds for war). Perhaps as a dare drink, though.

Although...

Okay, my metal plants so far aren't working.  I think I'm not getting something right in smelter reaction, but I'll put everything up so far.

First is the plant.  I named it mithril cotton because I couldn't think of another name for the metal that wasn't corny.  The alternative was Plantanium.  The only problem with this is that the harvested plant looks like a solid white block right now, but that's just a graphical glitch.  The same happens with cave vines and blood boils right now, only they're solid black blocks.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Next comes the smelter reaction.  Since I'm creating mithril thread, I tried to copy+edit the adamantium wafer reaction and work from there.  This is where I suspect the problem is.

Finally, here's the metal.  I made it better than steel any all ways (especially tensile since it's grown in threads) except with melting/boiling, where I copies the gold values.

Wouldn't it be easier to provide the thread at once?

Nice plants you have there. I like the Blood Boil especially.

Oh, and shiny, shiny graphics. 'O'_'O'

That's the great thing about this forum. We can derail any discussion into any other topic.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

I'm glad you like them.  And aren't they shiny? :D

I wish my stuff looked like that.  Right now, I've got wonderful glitched items (solid white or solid black) for my plants when picked.  I suggest only using the cave vines and blood boils for now until someone can help me with my metal farms.  Just think a grown mega project.

What do you mean?
As a product. Not a bar, but thread.

The plants already produce thread when processed.  Although it's called "mithril cotton fiber thread", which is technically just a rather valuable plant thread at this point. There aren't any bars involved until the end of smelting.   I still don't see what you're trying to tell me to do.

Are you processing the plant into thread first, and then trying to smelt it? If so, the plant thread is still a plant_mat, and you need to change the reaction to take in a plant, not a metal.
