Guild Wars
« on: May 02, 2010, 06:49:54 pm »

So steam is selling guild wars for 50% off, I just picked up the trilogy. Never played it before, but at 15 quid for 3 games i figured why not.

Does anyone else play this? Anyone interested in playing through it with me? Any tips on what to do? I'm assuming there arent any horribly broken classes or builds or whatever, but if there are lemme know. :p

Had Prophecies since release. (Funnily enough I have no idea how to play my 20s anymore)

I'm of the opinion GW's is the best MMO around, or rather at least it doesn't try to play the false pretense game. You want the other players around for the economy they provide. You don't want them around for the ganking, killstealing, and ninjalooting they provide too. Voila heavily instanced, and thus allowed to be story driven MMO. (The story is kinda lame from what I remember, but it's a fun and rather tactical game)

It's nice, though if you want to be competative in pvp(or even great for pve), you need a large number of skills. Access to new skill upgrades comes from new expansions though, so with 1/4 you'll be ages behind.

Which campaign(s) did you purchase?

Erm, it was called the guild wars trilogy, not sure which ones it's got exactly, is there four of them?

I've made a warrior, trying to pick a secondary profession and I'm learning axe skills. I assume if I specialise in axes I can't learn sword skills?

Oh man, i found the game overall pretty boring but there was this one mission where I was just blown away. I love the unbeatable you need to try your hardest just to escape and survive missions, PLUS I was the one who got pegged with something, and yelled to the others to go on without me, that I would stay behind and slow them down enough for the others to get back. And damn it, I did.

And it was awesome.

So as mind numingly boring as large swathes of the game were (which seems to be an MMO thing in general), there were some really fun parts that still make me want to go back and play again. But I don't, because having done them a couple times the boring parts are now even MORE boring.

Blegh, opinion so conflicted.

I play it. I am an ranger/monk.
This game was one of the awesomest MMOs I've ever played. :)
It's also the only 3d game that can run decently on my desktop. :\

EDIT: Oh, yeah!
I had a guild at one point. Complete with PvP map. :)
I think I had disbanded it, though. I forgot because I hadn't played it in months.

I've got all expansion save for Eye of the North. If anyone wants to I could dust them off and start anew if anyone wants to.

Regardless of what you put your points into you can always reallocate them next time you're in town. Once you level up a bit experiment and find a good build.

Also I can jump on and play with you whenever, I'm in Europe though so we'd have to meet in the international district.. I have a bunch of characters but the ones I can remember at the moment are a monk with a pimping bonding* build. An MM** necro, with the ability to switch to a blood/curses build. A fairly versatile ranger who can do running*** should you wish. Finally a Dervish who I don't massively like, the build is ok I guess but I never could find one I loved.

* Bonding builds use a skill which when cast on your allies halves any damage they take and splits it between the two of you whilst subtracting a certain amount from the damage you take. Against most enemies this results in you taking 0 damage and you allies taking half what they would. Combine this with another skill that gives you 1 energy every time you take damage and you can pretty much take on anything.

** MM means minion master, think me surrounded by a swarm of  little monstrosities which quickly kill anything.

*** Running simply means that I leg it through all the nasty monsters using ranger and monk skills to stay alive once I go into the next area you get dragged along with me, this is generally used to get a low level to high level places or else to get through areas when you can't be bothered to fight everything/when you try fighting everything kills you.

I still have a few copies of Prophecies + Eye of the North if anyone wants to trade for some other CD-keys. Lost my BF2 one in particular, but I'm open to whatever.

Someone gave me a copy of Guild Wars many, many years ago. I'm not sure if it'll work, since it had a scratch-and-reveal CD key that was already scratch-and-revealed.

I got the 3rd expansion when it came out, it was fun back then, but I lost interest after about a year. My brother started playing when I stopped, he purchased all of the other expansions pretty did all there is to do and stopped playing too. He was quite the addict, he and his (our?) cousin wouldn't stop playing together.

I don't really enjoy MMOs, but I guess I could try wiping the dust off of my old copy if you guys want to get together or something.
