Alrighty; assuming we reach the town in the downtime, I'd like to spend some downtime closely examining the slaughtervine corpses we acquired, finding out what they're made of, what their ichor contains, any possible uses for their 'components', whether they have a brain or thought centre, seeing if poisons from local plants have an effect, comparing the two (because one got kinda burned and the other didn't) and seeing if they have any weaknesses I can determine, etc. Any assistance is more than welcome.

Also, having experienced some harsh thicket, perhaps we could try to make/acquire clothing/equipment that would facilitate our movement through the dense forest (be it fire, thornproof clothing, good hiking boots).

With regards to next session, I'd like to try to determine whether any spirits (primal or otherwise) inhabit the Thornvine. If we discover any effective weapons to use against slaughtervines we might be able to handle a number more at a time.

Beyond that, all I've got is trying to find out as much about the forest and its denizens as we can, before we make further decisions.

I'd like to help inspect the corpses, though I have +0 to Nature, so, yeah. Maybe I can fetch bottles for you.  :P

And I think we're just going to have to find a way to avoid large packs of them; there's no way we'll be able to take half a dozen of those things under any semblance of normal circumstances, special weapon or no.

I'm alright with finding spirits, but we still don't know where anything is. Our next mission will have to penetrate a lot deeper to find anything or determine that there's nothing there, and I don't know if looking for spirits will change that any.


Overall though, fun session.

I enjoyed it. With the current situation I don't have much of an opportunity to peruse my own goals, and I can't leave the villagers either, so I guess I'm sticking with learning more about the forest. Probably going to see if I can purchase some javelins, though I only have 4 gold 5 silver(not enough to purchase even 1). Maybe I can craft some with some wood from the forest... crude maybe, but it's better than throwing rocks at things.

Given how mobile those things are, it doesn't seem like there is much we can do to prevent them from slipping past the fighters and eating up the squishies, especially when they use their action points - though maybe we can figure out some way to trick them. It seems obvious that they're sentient, because they displayed combat tactics beyond primal thought.

Sounds good!
And don't worry about the +0; in strict game terms, when you have an abundance of actions, aiding someone in a skill check can only be beneficial (+2 to my check if your check is 10 or greater, no penalty otherwise).
This makes you 55% useful, and every +1 you have in a skill up to a maximum of +9 makes you 5% more useful in aiding with that skill.

I like how open the intro was. I don't think I've been in a roleplaying situation where everything was left entirely for the players for an hour or so without the DM driving it along, and I think it kinda worked out well. Good first contact between characters.

Also, RNG, you can probably buy a couple of daggers and do with those (1gp apiece) until we get a bit more cash for you to get a heavy thrown weapon. You'll be using dex instead of strength, but you'll get +3 proficiency.
When we do get money, I'd advise getting throwing hammers or handaxes instead of javelins, as javelins lack the off-hand keyword. You can switch your longsword to one hand and use your off hand to throw a hammer or axe, but you'd have to stow or drop your sword to use a javelin.

So that's what D and D is like. That was fun. I need to get myself one of the player handbooks. Aaaanyway, Not much Safia can do aside from waiting for the green thumb to find out what he can from the vine beasts. Safia doesn't know much about plants, or about spirits either, though she could start talking up the thieves' guild and trying to find out the general situation. See what progress the Cazagan are making on their fort, and if there's any useful rumors about the forest that Ramum might be able to use. And helping Ramum with the lab dissection if she can.

EDIT: Oh, and checking to see if there's bounties on these creatures or any other in the forests. Might as well get paid for the corpses we bring back.

Since I'm using longsword and shield, I would have to sheath my sword anyway. Besides, daggers would be +2 hit, 1d4+2 damage; javelins would be +6 hit, 1d6+4 damage. The only advantage daggers have is being cheap. Of course, that might be the only thing that matters, since I can't throw a weapon I don't have. Still, if I can craft some sort of crude javelin with a attack penalty, that would have a higher accuracy and damage than a dagger, and wound be free.

I don't have proficiency with hand axes or hammers, so even the daggers would be better.

Improvised being the pseudo-javelin wooden stakes?

Would I still get the ability modifiers? -1 improvised with +4 strength is better than +2 proficiency and -1 dexterity.

Improvised being anything from a handful of dirt to a ceremonial weapon without weapon stats. Unless you agree with the DM that you can make javelins (and perhaps that they're shoddy), the attempts will be improvised by default.
As long as it's an improvised weapon, it has no keywords and thus lacks the heavy thrown property; unless the weapon used in the ranged basic attack is a heavy thrown weapon, it's DEX instead of STR.

More importantly, I believe thrown weapons don't break on impact, meaning they're reusable. That's likely the difference between being worth it and just buying a sling.

I think they do break/are unretrievable but I can't seem to find the source for this (it may have been regarding ammo).
I'm not sure, and I think it's absolutely reasonable to be able to retrieve weapons after a fight.

Looking on the character maker, I only see the bit about being used up on the ammunition, not the thrown weapons.

I can afford one javelin, then I'm completely broke.

Would be helpful, and I shouldn't need more than a few. I only used two ranged attacks that encounter, and those were when the things were fleeing. I didn't even need to attack them, since they were, well, running. We could have let them get away.
