There's a fully functional demo out that can build characters level 1 through three. Lemme dig up a link.

Feats are generally more minor than +2 to both a primary and secondary stat, and an extra skill is a nice perk, but generally if your class wants something you have enough skills to get it. Plus a lot of races have racial feats that complement a given class nicely; almost all human feats are general-purpose.

That said, some developer said they decided humans would basically be the "action movie heroes" race, which I think is very fitting.

Background benefits are an optional thingy that gives you a benefit based on your background. Most benefits are skill-related, and most backgrounds are either region-specific (and therefore setting-specific) or fairly broad (city-dweller, military, etc.)

And yeah, use the character builder demo. It's MUCH easier than digging through books in most cases.

Actually the Human race in 4e is where it should be; in 3.5 Human was basically the most optimised race for almost any given circumstance, in 4e, other races are always more optimised than Human for a given class, but what race it is changes depending on the class and choices; Humans always come second.

The one notable exception to this rule is Wizard, as Wizards are very singular stat dependant (they really only need Int) and the extra at-will Humans get is extremely valuable to a Wizard, wheras it's not really valuable at all to any other class because of the different stat dependancies.

What about the bonus feat and skills? Certainly those should help humans out with some other classes.

Feats are fairly minor bonuses and are much more common in 4e; in 3.5 that bonus feat was THE reason to choose Humans, as feats were so hard to come by and one feat could literally boost your power into ludicrous levels, in 4e, getting feats every second level, very few builds are short on feats, especially if weapon\implement expertise is free.

Extra skills are rarely much of a bonus; most of the 'core' skills you can pick up with any class, so unless the party is extremely small or focused, odds are the extra skill won't be of much use.

Now Humans are still a great race; they have access to one of the best Heroic tier feats with Action Surge and can get some awesome generic bonuses, they're just not specialised, which means they rarely take 1st place as 'the best race for X', but because of all those generic bonuses, they do often take 2nd place.

Welcome, Acanthus.

So, with Safia's background of being raised by dwarves, would she get some stonework or crafting skill bonuses then?

No crafting skills anymore, and I don't think there's a Raised By Dwarves background.

I'd have to look them up to know if there's anything fitting in there for dwarves; you might be stuck with something more generic like City Dweller.

Damn, I don't think I can DL this. This is a shared PC, and DL'ing anything is a big no-no.

Darn you, Dad!

There's a couple of Scales of War backgrounds that let you craft items, but there's no monetary gain for doing so; the only real advantage is if there's a lack of places to purchase equipment, and only at low level, since at higher levels you'll be able to teleport to planar cities and buy shit there (at least that's what the game assumes). The PC's are heroes, not craftsmen :P, if you want your character to be a sculptor and able to sculpt statues, say so and BAM, he's a sculptor and can sculpt stone statues. No game currency (xp, feats etc) need be spent on something that is almost purely RP in nature.

I'm pretty sure the PHB2 introduced race-specific backgrounds.

Not even something from a major company?

Say, how'd you manage to play Dwarf Fortress then?  :P

I managed to do enough chores to satisfy him.

I'll just use Mythweavers.

Hey, should I make a Infernal Pact Warlock or a Longbow using Ranger?

For some reason, the crossbow talent isn't showing up on my character builder. Could someone post exactly what bonuses I get for choosing it?

My advice is to make both and then compare them. Usually at some point in the process you'll realize one is cooler/better than the other.

Probably cuz you're using the demo version, which iirc only has corebook information available and XBow talent is from MP3.

XBow talent replaces Rogue Weapon Talent and gives you a +1 to attack rolls with Crossbows (instead of a +1 to attack rolls with Daggers).
