Hell, I'll probably make a Warlock, but Neruz said it was a hard class to manage... I'm no munchkin either.

I was thinking one of these: http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Driders_%284e_Race%29

And I don't need too many benefits. I mostly want to play an unusual race in unusual circumstances, not because I want a heap of benefits. I'm not a munchkin. The benefits would be tailored to represent her background, even if they aren't the best combination.
I know what you mean about the benefits... one of the games I played was with a horrible metagamer who gave his characters the most obscure and unlikely circumstances to gain a specific set of (often overpowered) bonuses.

Hell, I'll probably make a Warlock, but Neruz said it was a hard class to manage... I'm no munchkin either.
What does being a munchkin have to do with hard classes?

I mean he was talking about how to make your choices and all that stuff. I go for roleplaying a bit more than min-maxing. Its beyond me on how complicated it really is...

I mean, I like the whole idea of trading my soul for eldritch powers of awesome, but if I'll be useless in a fight, I'd rather be a rogue.

Well, chances are the story I have in mind might be just as unlikely, but it's because I want to see what kind of stories can arise from it.

I think a good example of warlock complexity can be seen from their curses. Cursing is a minor action, meaning it can usually be done for "free" once a round, but it can only target the nearest enemy. You deal more damage when you attack cursed foes, so you generally want to curse someone before you bother attacking them.

The trouble comes when you want to attack a specific enemy, because unless he happens to be closest or tied for closest, you can't attack him very well. So your options are attack him and suck, wail on whatever's in front of you, or figure out a way to position yourself in such a way that he's closer than any of his allies but still can't club you like a seal next round. Depending on how strategic you feel like being, this might be an interesting challenge or your own class features trying to kill you.

(On a related note, Prime Shot gives you a +1 bonus to attack rolls if none of your allies are closer to the target than you are; needless to say, I've been clubbed a few times trying for this one)

Not sure what I'd want to play. Warlock is probably my favorite, but if Acanthus wants to try it I don't want to steal ALL the fun. Might go battlerager two-handed fighter, end up with an offtank/very durable striker.

Also I loved the 3.5 Abyss. This campaign sounds like it could be a very good idea.  :P

So, should I try a Warlock or just make a Rogue or a Ranger?

Let me put it this way: If you want to flank as a rogue, that requires a certain level of tactics. How much depends on a lot of things, but you have to pay attention to where you and everyone else is. Same deal with a fighter that's trying to keep enemies off the squishies- he can't just stand right in front of his current target and expect everything to be alright. Compare that to a fighter who's just in it for the damage or a ranger who just stands there and fires at will, and you've got the difference between a warlock and most other classes.

So, if that sounds fun/alright, go for it, warlocks are awesome. If it sounds too complex/not fun, consider a simpler class.

Good man. Thought about who you're selling your soul to, or you just know you wanna do it?  :D

I'm thinking of either Infernal for MASSIVE DAMAGE or Fey for status effects. A human is definitely what I'm going for.

More setting information is available.  Thornvine Forest is the plane you'll meet each other on, and the other entries are places of interest on the plane.

Yeah.  Something very much like that drider is doable.  I'm probably going to cut a few things to make it fit the setting and published races better, though.

What I'd like to cut is the following, let me know if any of these features were why you wanted the race.  Spydric language is gone, for one.  You can pick either Deep Speech or Elven, and that will become the language of Drow in the setting.  Drow don't have a Fey Origin, so that's gone too*.  Exotic weapon proficiencies are right out.  Racial preference for weapons is usually modeled with race specific feats in 4E, so we'll create one or two of those instead**.
*Fey Origin will probably get removed from Eladrin as well.  There isn't exactly a Feywild for them to come from.
**This last change is more of a stealth buff, since the racial weapon feats are very good in heroic.

I'm sure I've left some questions unanswered.  If you have an unposted question or a posted but unanswered question please let me know, although today won't have the fastest responses.

If I got in touch with my (hopefully small) munchkin side, I'd say that what I'd like most about dridders was the spider climb, the high speed, the dark vision. Maybe the drider would have a daily ability to make a limited amount of silk, sticky or otherwise. (Which I could make into useful stuff with a silk crafting skill or something.

I don't really know the advantage to a Fey origin, so I wont miss it. I don't know much about the weapon proficiencies, but I thought it would reflect more on her background. Starting out, she would actually know very little about drow and driders and such. But what are the dwarves like in your settings? What race would be the most likely to adopt a drider baby they found? She would get her language (aside from common) from them, and maybe the weapon preferences too.

I think I want a dwarf fighter with a great-axe. I don't play enough melee classes who just kill stuff.

Will this background work with the setting? <Clan> is falling on hard times financially. Several dwarves have gone off adventuring or to work in Malebranche, hoping to earn enough gold to send back home. <Character> is one such adventurer, and has spent most of the previous year as a tailor after his brother and adventuring companion was killed by lizardmen. Unable to earn much, it didn't take long for him to be persuaded into taking up his axe once more and joining <some other player's character>.
