Hello,

I want to employ a third miner because of some larger digging projects. So I forged a copper pick, chose a dwarf, set her to mine and do nothing else. But she simply refuses to pick up the pick and start digging.

My fortress has 23 inhabitants at the moment. The arsenal dwarf did not show up on the nobles screen yet. Does the pick count as a weapon such that dwarfs won't equip with a pick without an arsenal dwarf? Any other hints about how to motivate her to start digging?

It is possible that this is an arsenal dwarf problem.  As such you have two options:

1) Wait for the new miner to pick up the pick on her own.
2) Wait for the arsenal dwarf job to appear (sometimes it lags), then make someone do it.

In summary your problems may be fixed by time.

Did you set the miner to mine using Dwarf Therapist? http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=39229.0

If so try setting it by hand (find the dwarf toggle of mining, unpause, toggle on mining) and see if that sparks him into action.

Great many thanks! Indeed, setting the labor in DF instead of using Dwarf Therapist solved the issue.
