best cause of "fun"
« on: May 02, 2010, 08:26:20 am »

hello forum.

I'm new to dwarf fortress and i was wondering what has been the best way you have caused "fun"(losing is fun as the game says).

to get this going ill start, today i had a river that i made one channel in which was too close, and the river flooded into part of my bottom farming level so i make a screw pump with a waterwheel attached. this thing goes crazy fast and spews out tons of water from the river as i realize i hadn't plugged the hole. so much water is that it surges inside my fortress, washes my dwarfs into the basement and drowns them. needless to say i will never use a waterwheel to power a pump for a long time.

your move

I'm new to DF Forums aswell, but I'm also new to DF in all.
Extermination by Unicorns. (I thought Joyous Wilds was a great place to start out. BAAAAAD IDEA)
I've had many flooding issues and now my dwarven settlements feed themselves by hunting/foraging/fishing NEVER FARMING.
To many drown dwarfs.

Then I had the brilliant idea to make a giant multi-layered stockpile without supports.
One day it all just caved in and killed -everyone- because I was mass-cutting gems.

Then I cut down to much wood and the elves came and killed us all, and my axedwarves stood no chance.

Funny thing is, I've never actually lost my fortress to anything unintentionally.... But, as for Fun I caused, It was breaching the HFS, or flooding the fortress and walling "the survivors" in the farming/dining area (40#)
They all went berserk/insane/tantrumed

Made a Legendary dining hall with masterwork engravings, masterwork statues, a zoo, high quality tables, thrones etc. Decided to add a mist machine. Something went horribly wrong and the fort was filled with water, blood, mud and drowning dwarfs in a matter of seconds. That's when I learned that all water pumps need a shut off lever.

Starting the irrigation process, then getting distracted by a random mood only to return and find not only your entire dining/food level flooded but every level below that, including all your living quarters straight down into the power generating room. Which wasn't supposed to have water in yet, and the premature power surge caused your screw pump stack to pump magma destined for the forge area at the top straight on top of the mooding metalsmith who had seized the temporary non-magma-powered furnace and was too busy creating some random artefact to notice it was getting a little hot in there.

You decide to wait for winter so you can try and pump the water out off the map without more flooding in from the river you tapped in to. Meanwhile, the metalsmith's wife, a trained axedwarf and your only soldier who is armed with a steel axe and full suit of steel armour that took you a long time to make with wood because of the previous lack of magma, goes berserk. As it turns out, small temporary dining areas and a fort of almost entirely task-less dwarves do not mix well with a berserk axedwarfess.

I love this game.

I had a dream of making a magmafall and magma moat to defend my fortress. Guess what.

I tried that once.

On the bright side, nobody can ever attack the fortress. Indeed, all they ever meet are walls and floors of magma. All the way in. Right down the grand entrance, into the grand staircase and all the way down to the grand intensive burns ward of the hospital........

I really want that one as a "when". I want "grubs", and "virgin woman" to turn into a dragon. and monkey children to suddenly sprout wings. And I want the Dwarven Mutant Academy to only gain their powers upon reaching puberty. I also have a whole host of odd creatures that only make sense if I divide them into children and adults.

Also, tadpoles.

New fortress on a glacier and a tundra.

I was doing mining shaft straight to the bottom until I hit some puddingrock? that turn into stone. This cause me to look about for a place to breach the puddingstone.

I haphazardly breached an aquifer. The one of four I was aware of. It froze the only entrance to the breach, thankfully sealing it up, but it froze one of my two miners. The other miner was trapped, and drowned in ice cold water.

And this is in the first year before the immigration wave. The other five were dandy until a Yeti moment later destroyed my flood gates of my front door and nearly killing one of my dorf and nearly killing two more; leaving one functional. I thought I could pull this off, he was my cheif medical dorf, and he had skills in the medical stuff. Sadly he grew uber depressed and died, and my immigrant wave of two came just in time to watch the last two dorf from dehydration.

My worst cases of fun are:

Cave-ins killing my experienced miners.
Troglodytes giving me a bad time.
Giant toads/olms saying hi, to a dwarf's face.

Tarran has the "Tarran Bug", a bug which causes the affected character to repeatedly hit teammates while dual-wielding instead of whatever the hell he is shooting at.

Cave-ins. Always. Designated a 10 zlevel deep shaft, but forgot one miner was less experienced then the other, and the more experienced one dug out a whole zlevel while the other was working on a set above.

The whole thing caved in on top of the more experienced miner, and the other miner has no arms or legs and is stuck deep in the shaft unconscious.
