Why no neutral/friendly creatures in the Underdark?
« on: May 02, 2010, 01:12:36 am »

I'm a little disappointed that there are no friendly or neutral creatures in the underworld, even if they have no AI and just wander around down there. I think the game would be so damn fun if you found another civilization down there and had to help them fend off some monsters, or another fantasy cliche. This is of course wishful thinking, but at the least there should have been mindless neutral/friendly creatures down there. I only played DF2010 for a few hours, so maybe there are?

I think there are friendly underground civilizations (composed of *noun*-men, I think).

But I'm probably wrong.

The underground tribes are only friendly if you meet them with an adventurer. In Fortress Mode, they're always chaotic evil, just like our good friends the goblins.

A damn shame.

I, for one, can't wait for the diplomacy arc.

Yes. Clearly a bug that ought to be fixed in the future, but exploit it in the meantime.

I always saw them as lawful neutral with chaotic tendencys. I mean they don't set out to cause you trouble like goblins and kobalds, they just protect there homeland.

I would be satisfied with neutral/friendly creatures just wandering around for now. Also it would be simple to just put a trade center down there.

animal-men can actually turn friendly...if they get engaged by hostile underground creatures such as Forgotten Beasts.

It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

Last time I saw some engage a FB they lost interest when I sent in reinforcements to help and they beat up half of my military before scuttling off into the water to scare all of my guys out of hauling anyone to the hospital.

Are you trying to make the elves cool/evil?

Anyway, I would love the occasional friendly or neutral Forgotten Beast.

Player: What's that thing...holy crap, it flies, shoots acid, is made of microcline, and releases a deadly gas upon death! The whole fort is doomed! Prep the military, prep the tombs, someone start building a wall--
Beast: Hey y'all! Can I have a beer?
Urist: Uh...sure...
Beast: Sweet, thanks! Barely any beer in those caverns. Hey, this place ain't so half bad! All the walls are smooth and stuff! Can I stay for a bit?
Urist: ...Um...yeah, yeah, sure. I'm sure the baron will let you bunk with him...
Beast: Awesome! See ya 'round, dude!
Player: WTF
