New Player - Care to help? :)
« on: May 01, 2010, 08:52:17 pm »

Hello.

First of, WOW! What a game!
When I first read about it and saw some screenshot I wasn't that impressed. Then I tried it, and now I'm stuck... Haven't been playing the Starcraft 2 beta as much lately.
I just love this game.

But... :)

I think I might need some help. I've never played any game like this before I mean with the ASCII graphics and suchs.
To start of I got the May Green's graphics and I was already enjoying the game at that time.
Then I went to youtube to see if there was any Videotutorial and there is, alot as you sure know. I saw some Captnduck's videos. Although they are mostly for 40d.

Maybe the help is out there and I just need to get hold of it, and read it. I know about Dwarfwiki and alot of things.
I just wonder if there is something you can tell me, that I don't know... something you know that I don't know - since I'm new. Get it? :)

About mods, I tried DigDeeper only to find out that it wasnt för 31.03 version :/ - Same about Stonesense and Visual Fortress. But I don't really need those since I don't have a big nice fortress to look at.
Anyway, are there any content - graphics mods that I _should_ use. Or just look in to?
I prefer to stay with the May Green's kindish of graphics. I'm not some to judge a game by its grapichs but, without May Green's mod I think I wouldn't stayed this long with the game. That is one week ;)

I got a nice fortress comming up, lets see about that.
Just can't get the military to work... or I can't get my grasp around it.

Well I think thats all, if not I'll be back.
Cheers.

ps. I think it would've been nice with a help forum for DF. Oh and I haven't even touched Adventure mode! ds.

I prefer the original ASCII myself. If I had to pick a graphics set however, I would probably go with Phoebeus' cause of the look.

Where do I get that? Any screenshots?
I found this DF 31.03 (graph ver.) with +¤Gold Plated¤+ tileset http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=2021 But not much changed, I do like the stairs and walls tho.

I got a question.
Here: http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010
I can read:

But I can't Zoom or Resize the window.

...But not much changed
It's not going to change much.  This is a tile-based game, all they're doing is putting in modified tiles, they can't redo the interface.  Creature do support limited graphics but this is broken somewhat in v31.  Probably the most popular tileset is Mike Mayday's, especially since it comes all pre-made and stuff, but I dislike it since it makes pulled drawbridges and some bits of machinery ugly, and fills dwarves names' with switches and pants.  A limitation of ASCII graphics is that the same symbol may be used to draw bag, fish, or male, so if you make it look more like a fish suddenly all your bags look like fish...  And when the same symbol is used to draw stairs and the z-level keys, what're you going to do when it tells you "push the <picture of down stairs> key"?

Well you're not using 40D# so you can't.  That's coming to v31 any day week month now.

Sadly the interface is one of the major turn-offs for a lot of new players. Everyone is well aware of that, the developer included. It's on the schedule of things to change, but with each major update new screens and features get added that would mean having to go back and redo the interface again.

Being an old rogue-like player myself I have no issue with ASCII graphics, but for those that prefer them there's a ton of graphics mods. Have a browse through the Modding forum (link). Also the Wiki for User Graphics Sets (link). Sadly not much right now that can be applied to DF2010.

Finally don't give up! The game is constantly being updated with new features and fixes for bugs. It's still in the early alpha stages of development so it's nowhere near what the finished product should be.

also, as soon as you get your 20th dwarf or so, getting dwarf therapist is mandatory, look it up, it's always on the first page of the modding forum

I already got the Therapist. Before I tried use the in-built interface, but geez!
I'm so glad I got my hands on Therapist :)

I'm not a quiter so. And the more I play the more idéas I get and more and more things starts to open up. Soon I might get a small military up - for the first time. Already started making weapons and alls. Maybe sounds small and not a big of a deal, but... when things happend when you do stuff (sounds wierd) its very rewarding :)

I have one problem tho, don't know if it'll get answered here but I'll give it a shot.

A dwarf claimed a workshop, and he needs "Rock bars!" and "tanned hide" I read on the wiki that "rock bars!" is actually 'metal bars'. I got alot of Iron bars and some dog, mule and cow leather. But the dwarf doesn't move from the workshop. How do I get the stuff to him?
Both "rock bars!" and "tanned hide!" shows up in around two secounds so...

Might aswell start planing a graveyard unless I fix this :/

Still playing! cheers.

The dwarf will gather the items on his own, assuming he can path to them.

Furthermore, a request for "rock bars" might actually be a request for a specific metal other than iron. You should probably check the dwarf's preferences, because he will tend to specifically desire a metal listed as one he likes. Also, until he picks up the needed bars of metal, he probably won't go for leather because dwarves pick up stuff for moods in order.

Oh thanks!

"Asrerlolok likes aluminum..."

Hmm... looked it up on the wiki.

"Other than adamantine, aluminum is one of the two highest-valued common metals in the game (the other being platinum). It is the second lightest metal, next to adamantine."

Guess I'll start on that graveyard then...

Don't be so hasty!

Sure, aluminium may be one of the most valuable metals, but it's quite common - dig around a bit and you should run into a few small clusters of it.

Funny you'd say that. All of a sudden she started working on a artifact.

"This is a dog leather leggings. All crafdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is decorated with dog leather and encircled with bands of cat leather. On the item is an image of lungfish in mule leather.
On the item is an image of Zas Bookflame the dwarf in bronze. Zas Bookfllame is laboring. The artwork relates to the settling of the dwarf Zas Bookflame in Magicbronze in the midautumn of 1051.

So this is the beauty of this game, that I love so much. That Zas Bookflame actually exsisted in the raw files right? When the world generated its history and events. If I got this right, and I hope I do. I could be able to look Zas up in the legend mode right? - of even meet him in Adventure mode?
If so, this game is so mind-blowing!

Fun stuff indeed with this game!

Correct on all counts, except one small detail. You won't find Zas in the RAWs anymore than you'll find Urist McArtifactMaker in the RAWs, they're all just based off of the dwarf template. Just a detail of terminology, don't sweat it.

And you can certainly look him up in the Legends (you have to jump through a hoop or two to actually get there) and, assuming he's alive, meet him in Adventure mode.

Hi!

I have to correct a few misconceptions there.

First of all, Zas Bookflame is probably one of your original seven dwarves. You started your fortress in spring 1051, right? (It will be the case if you go by the defaults). EDIT: I reread the description. It says Mid-Autumn, so it is one of your immigrants.

Secondly, the raw files do not contain historical figures but only basic information the game needs to generate your world. Thus, each world has a new and basically unit set of historical figures.

Third, while Zas is probably just one of your local dwarves, engravings, decorations, figurines, and statues can and will depict historical events that took place in the same subregion that your fortress is located in. Let's say you embark in a forest called "The Fortunate Jungle", the depictions can show anything that has occurred in "The Fortunate Jungle", regardless of whether it happened on the very spot the fortress is or many days of travel away.

I am glad you are having fun with this great game.

Yeah, you should be able to look him up in the Legends, and see who he is, what he's done, where he came from, etc.

Although, 1051 is a rather late year, I think the year 1050 is when the world generation stops, by the default settings, unless something else stops it early, like too many megabeasts having died out.  So that makes me think he may be referring to someone in your own fortress, perhaps even himself, which would be just like him to commemorate his awesomeness in coming to your city with stylish dog/cat leather pants. :)

I'd check, Is your fortress named Magicbronze?  Do you have a dwarf named Zas Bookflame wondering around it? :)

Oh thanks for clearing up the raw's thingy.
What I meant was that he was made from the raws, not exactly IN the raws, sorry for not making my more clear :)
Anyway, this is a experiance I've never experianced before, since the world is so huge its so awsome that it has effects on everything...

And yes Zas Bookflame is a dwarf of mine, actually my master blacksmith, although not the one who made the artifact. The artifact creator is infact only a 'Passive acquaintance' to Zas Bookflame and vice-versa. Maybe it will go up now?... or maybe worse.

Is there an easy way to find once own fortress in adventure mode? I can't really remember the exact tile I embarked on. Would be cool in acouple of weeks to visit it in Adventure mode, or just get revenge on whatever will destory it.

Cheers.
