it's not really trolling if you get lukewarm responses. He might well be a wannabe troll, and thats in fact my suspicion. But who cares.

Not to throw a monkeywrench into anybody's day, but Charlemagne is just so simultaneously polite and bubbly that he can't be anything but a troll.

Careful, gentlemen, he could explode at any moment!

If you are referring to me, kind sir, then I shall take great pleasure in proving you wrong, but, seeing as I am quite new to anything vaguely forum related, and barely even know its lingo (though, yes, I do know what a troll is) I can't really be expected to know what I'm talking about. Oh, and Chairman, you too.

A quick guide to surviving on the forums:
Take it easy. Be cool.
(Or if you will, good sir, to use your own language: Do not take offence needlessly, shy away from quarelling, be considerate of other forumites and maintain a mellow composure)
Note: being considerate involves doing your best to NOT double post.

I'm a mild fan of the Napoleonic period, so maybe we could have a talk about the subject some time in the future. Ever played Empires in Arms?

edit:What the hell, how did I manage to magically post while still typing? It's must be a miracle.

Point taken. Though I have one final point to make on the matter before I stop discussing the whole thing entirely. You guys all have individual enigmas that you regularly keep up on the forums to differentiate yourselves and, you know, feel individual. Is it such a crime that mine be that of the grammatically correct, verbose, polite guy that can be counted upon to raise topics of history as often as other people raise topics on movies, or anime, or the like (speaking of which, yes I will open a Napoleonic forum if you so wish, thanks for the suggestion). So next time, before anyone accuses me of wrongful conduct on the forums, please consider what I have said. Thank you, schpiel over.

Oh, come on. Don't get all defensive on us.
We do love politeness and interesting subjects to discuss. It's just the over-the-topness and redundancy that seems to annoy.
Exempli gratia(I'm using latin to appear more inteligent): don't start a topic on Napoleonic period just for the sake of it, unless you've got something interesting to discuss.

Come now, I'd like to keep the historical discussion going on, so let's stick with that.

Check and mate? Excommunications backfired as often than not. Turns out that if the reigning monarch was capable enough, personal loyalty to him outweighted excommunion schommunion stuff, go figures. Quite a few times the pope ended up in dire straits due to these backfires.

And then there's that legendary popefight schism where they ended up excommunicating each other.

Double KO?

That happened all the time back in the day, really.  Culminating in the period between 1409 and 1417, when you had three different Popes, one based in Rome, a second in Avignon, and a third in Pisa.  It took the Council of Constance to resolve that mess, by getting rid of all three and putting a fourth one in - well, the Agivnon Pope didn't like it, so there were still two for a while.  The Holy Roman Emperor, Sigismund of Luxemburg (a supporter of the Roman claimant - a rare thing for Holy Roman Emperors, but then again the Avignon Pope was supported by the HRE's perpetual rival France), had his own part in the proceedings, also taking time out to burn Jan Hus at the stake.  Of course, this (both thises, both the schism and Hus) would ultimately contribute to the appearance of the Protestant reformation in the Empire a century later.

Hm, there's an interesting line of conversation here.  Support of the northern princes for the Protestant Reformation: primarily used as a way of weakening the Empire and opposing the attempt of Charles V to resore the Emperor's power?

Unless you see German as a particularly romantic language, I don't see it.

Hey, took German as a foreign language, it's actually pretty delicate. It's just their accent that's not. :P

Well, it's the same canny sort of politico-religious move that Constantine made a precedent for all the way back in the day, so I can see it as a primary reason for their support. The HRE's ties to the Catholic Church made anything that weakened the church a viable option for the HRE's enemies. Not that they'd admit to that kind of sabotage, but there you go.

So, hi guys, I just wanted to see where this went if I started this topic, and seeing as how it relates to my avatar, I find it to be a legitimate topic of conversation.
So, the Holy Roman Empire, it was neither Holy, Nor Roman, Nor really an Empire. Discuss.

               Cheers!

And the National Socialist German Workers' Party was not socialist nor supportive of the German working classes.

Also, it depends how holy Charlemagne counts as being.

But, yeah, Germans aren't very good at naming things. Sort of like dwarves. "Toastracks the Inevitability of Booze, a tower cap toy sword".

1. iam german
2. no we're better at naming things than you think!

He's right, you know.

English: Orgasm.

German: Liebestod. (Love-death)

(Unless I mixed that up somehow.)

The High German accent only sounds harsh if you take it to extremes - I think it sounds quite sonorous when an actual German speaks it.  The ich-laut sound of the "ch" in particular.  :)

Personally, I don't really the histories of the dark/feudal ages much. Haven't read much about it, but from what I understand, the H in HRE was mostly just titular, they were mostly germanic... but then again, what do I know?

I would like to make it clear that I love the German language and I'd really, really like to visit Germany some day. Maybe even live there for a while.

I just don't find it a particularly romantic language. Not that it needs to be.

Die Waffen legt an!

And off I go to listen to that song.
