The Holy Roman Empire is just what the Pope kind of renamed the Frankish Empire, after Charlemagne conquered a good long stretch of Europe, from Modern France to modern Poland, just about. The Roman Empire, the real one, was technically still around, but had lost it's foothold in Italy. Due to differences in inheritance laws, the the title of Emperor of the Roman Empire went to a female. Charlemagne saw this to mean that the throne to Emperor of Rome was empty, and the Pope agreed.

The coronation of Charlemagne was nothing more than a political stunt to attempt to de-legitimize the actual Empress's claims to overlordship over Europe.

I agree with, that, however, the question is did it evolve into anything after its Charlemagne's death and the Empire's subsequent division between his sons? Did it remain a Holy Roman Empire?

While you're reading HHGTTG, take a look at the way others post (except, of course for Deathworks. Ignore him. Her. It.). You will notice that the formal style is pretty much unused outside of the occasional Opening Post because it takes up a lot of space and time and gets pretty redundant. Feel free to write more casually.

Taking your comments into account, I have multiple, I will say "excuses" for lack of a better word which I hope will excuse me from any remarks to this effect in the future. Firstly, I do in fact know who Batman is, what I didn't know was the second reference, sorry for any confusion, I wasn't very clear. Secondly, I'm not a very casual person, I'm sorry, I do understand that on the internet it is a major character flaw  . Thirdly, I understand that no-one who deems to use sarcasm on the internet means it in any malicious way, but I choose to specify my intentions as a post-script for politeness' sake, as the individual reading my post will otherwise have no real idea as to my intentions. I'm sorry for the rant, and it was in no way intended to be directed only at you, nor to apply only to you, so please don't take it the wrong way. Well, and then there's the fact that for much of its existence, it wasn't so much an empire as a loose confederation of assorted feudal fiefdoms (kingdoms, duchies, princialities, baronies, marches, etc.) plus some city-states and then scattered Imperial holdings. Which made consolidation of power an absolute royal pain (pun intended).

Compared to other historical empires, the HRE was incredibly weak because of this. Although it's also fascinating to study for the same reason. And the weird love-hate relationship the Emperors had with the Popes. My favorite episode being when Pope Gregory VII excommunicates Emperor Henry IV, who then has his personally loyal bishops try to excommunicate the Pope. That takes balls.

But then of course, Gregory reminded Henry that if he's no longer Pope, then the investiture of Henry as king of Germany is no longer binding, and he's just a guy with a sword and no vassals. Check and mate, bitch.

Check and mate? Excommunications backfired as often than not. Turns out that if the reigning monarch was capable enough, personal loyalty to him outweighted excommunion schommunion stuff, go figures. Quite a few times the pope ended up in dire straits due to these backfires.

True, but in this case, Henry didn't have much loyalty among his underlings, and had to go literally on his knees back to the Pope before the Saxons and various other rebellious groups had a golden opportunity to break free.
