The Holy Roman Empire

So, hi guys, I just wanted to see where this went if I started this topic, and seeing as how it relates to my avatar, I find it to be a legitimate topic of conversation.
So, the Holy Roman Empire, it was neither Holy, Nor Roman, Nor really an Empire. Discuss.

And the National Socialist German Workers' Party was not socialist nor supportive of the German working classes.

Also, it depends how holy Charlemagne counts as being.

But, yeah, Germans aren't very good at naming things. Sort of like dwarves. "Toastracks the Inevitability of Booze, a tower cap toy sword".

That rather depends on the time period, doesn't it?  When we're talking about an empire that lasted more than a millenium, it's hard to say anything general about it.  The practically nonexistent empire of the 18th century that Voltaire was talking about is one thing.  The Carolingian, Ottonian, or Staufen empires were all quite different.  Definitely empires, varyingly holy (constant excommunications aside), and maybe Roman from time to time.  Charlemagne being crowned by the Pope in Rome gives him a bit of a claim to the title.  He may have even been too holy - just ask the Saxons he converted by force how that went.

I fully agree, in that while Charlemagne was, by Christian standards, a great converter of peoples, his methods, especially towards the Saxons were anything but holy, or sanctified. (*Mass executions*, -*cough*-*cough*-)  :D

Yeah, and they really can't make up new words either. They tend to like to stick old words together, generally ones that don't make a lot of sense.

The way I have always heard it was,
"I speak Spanish to God, Italian to women, French to men, and German to my horse."
All of which make sense, if you think about it (Spanish being a prevolent romantic language popular in the priesthood, Italian being a courting language, French being a diplomatic language, and German being rough and casual). Still wierd, though.
