At the time, it wasn't that uncommon for a member of the court. Still spent his whole later life trying to learn how to read, in vain  :'(. (He tried really hard though, so give him credit!)

No, no, no... we're talking about Charlemagne now, sorry for any confusion.

I'm sorry, am I the one "double posting"? My sincere apologies. I'll try to do better in the future.  :-[

                     Cheers!

(P.S., and we're talking about the Holy Roman Empire, not the Roman Empire, so there is no East/West, if you don't understand the distinction, Wiki it, and I hope I'm not being too rude, if I am, apologies in advance :-[)

... you could argue about there being an east and west HRE as well, as the last emperor of the HRE proper dissolved it and procclaimed himself emperor of Austria (Osterreich), thus making him an "Eastern" emperor

You're right, didn't think of it that way simply because the terminology of "Austro-Hungarian Empire" doesn't lend itself to the mental imagery of the thing. Good thought! :D

You may also want to remove the incessant cheering, as most of us have already understood that you're a jocund sort of fellow =)

While you're reading HHGTTG, take a look at the way others post (except, of course for Deathworks. Ignore him. Her. It.). You will notice that the formal style is pretty much unused outside of the occasional Opening Post because it takes up a lot of space and time and gets pretty redundant. Feel free to write more casually.

Also, note the "edit" button. That's key.

In general, it's safe to wait for several responses before answering (though for project threads where your updates are more important, it's a different matter).

I'm sorry, I don't get the reference. Excuse me if it's something I should know, and that is sincere, not sarcastic.

BAT-man. The second most popular superhero of all time? His side-kick,  Robin? Also, Bat-men, the winged creatures of the caves that Dwarves  delve? That one? You a window in your cell, right?

(Sarcasm and insult humor is very popular on the internet. Don't take any of that the wrong way. Generally, old hands like to act a bit tougher than they actually are in real life, especially to the new users.)

It was the Pope that crowned the King of the Germans, thereby forming the Holy Roman Empire. The Pope is holy; therefore, it is a Holy Roman Empire.

Post-Charlemagne, though, the Pope generally hated the HRE.

Also, turns out Charlemagne was a bit of a tubby chappy.
