How to Tell if a Civ is extinct.
« on: April 30, 2010, 08:59:10 am »

So I am about 5 years into my first fortress in the newest version and I'm starting to worry that the mad dwarfs of my world killed everything else off in their thirst for powah! I have only gotten caravans from Dwarfs and have not seen a single goblin or kobold.

To be 100% sure, you'd have to check in Legends mode.

Dwarves aren't usually aggressive - you can automagically get dwarven caravans even if your civ is extinct.

Migrants as well.

Or you could simply be located in a far off spot where the other civs cant' reach.

Could someone tell me how to simply check what civs are extinct in Legends mode? Apart from leafing through several thousand entries one by one, that is.

Might I suggest Mephansteras' fantastic Worldgen Log Parser?

Basically, load up legends mode, and export the worldgen data. Then, run the log parser, and it will return a nice concise list of all civs, their populations (including mixed-race populations and notable critters), their leaders, etc. on a city-by-city basis, all sorted by civilization.

It's pretty awesome.

Open the Legends 'map' and change Age to the maximum possible. Look at territories.

Then, go to Civs/Groups thingy and look what civs they are.

If you're good, you can tell from the map, based on names of settlements.

@Solifuge: Mephansteras Log Parser is bad, if you don't know Pearl. Most of us don't. There was a executable version, though. Just look at DFFD ;)

Never mind, I mistaken it with other of his thingies.

I worldgen with batch file, then go back and review the output to figure out which regions have the civilizations I want.

example, "region5-world_sites_and_pops.txt" . This is from a pocket worldgen that I tweaked so that all 5 of the main races would survive.

Hi!

I assume that you mean beyond simply checking which civs have contact with your site when you are selecting an embark site, right? Only existing civs should be listed there.

Actually, the quickest method is to save the map and world data (either directly after genning the world or from legend mode). This will create several text files, including a sites and pops file (for instance: region11-world_sites_and_pops.txt)

Open that file.
Search for humans, dwarves, elves, goblins until you find sites related to such civs. Allow me to use an excerpt to illustrate:
Quote
80: Etirofa, "Torchbeached", a forest retreat
   Owner: The Spongy Coalition, humans
Parent Civ: The Confederation of Age, humans
   administrator: Asto Crowdsculpture, elf
   42 elves
81: Cattenromlam, "Channelcloak", a mountain fortress
   Owner: The Submerged Keys, dwarves
Parent Civ: The Rack of Excavations, dwarves
   108 dwarves
82: Ushussodu, "Trammelbow", a town
Owner: The Society of Tests, humans
Parent Civ: The Confederation of Age, humans
   warlord: Ontha Bendfruits, human
   47 humans
83: Ngosodusnu, "Vicebusts", a dark fortress
Owner: The Sin of Rubbing, goblins
Parent Civ: The Dungeons of Releasing, goblins
   98 goblins
   10 elves
   7 humans
   1 black demon
   2 elf prisoners
   1 human prisoner
84: Unbehsodu, "Smoothbowed", a town
Owner: The Council of Crests, humans
Parent Civ: The Confederacy of Listening, humans
   warlord: Isi Spokenfires, human
   77 humans
85: Gusil逆eb, "Copperpost", a mountain fortress
Owner: The Fence of Soaking, dwarves
Parent Civ: The Friendly Hammers, dwarves
   93 dwarves
86: €瀕esidaya, "Cherishedlarks", a forest retreat
Owner: The Boar of Whispers, elves
Parent Civ: The Matched Earth, elves
   68 elves

Sites 81 and 85 have a dwarven parent civ
Sites 82 and 84 have a human parent civ
Site 83 has a goblin parent civ (and actually even goblins!!!!)
Site 86 has an elven parent civ

So, all the four major races have active civs.
Note, however, that site 80, while being a forest retreat with an elven population is actually part of a human civ. So, that site would not grant you access to an elven civ.

I hope this helps (^_^;;

I just ran this check on my current fortress world.  According to the results, elves, goblins, and dwarves are extinct.  A large human civilization exists, whose territory includes a former elven forest retreat (now devoid of elves).  That human civilization is at war with a nearby 'goblin' civilization, whose population is entirely made up of humans and one demon.  This would appear to explain why I haven't seen a single trade caravan.

If the local goblin civilization consists entirely of humans, will I get human babysnatchers and groups of humans in ambushes?  I know we used to see ambush groups and sieges led by goblins in the older versions, but if the goblin civilization is completely made up of humans, do we get all-human sieges from the goblin civs, or sieges made up mostly of goblins generated on the spot, or no sieges at all?  I'll have to run this fortress a while longer and see who shows up.

I *think* you should get human sieges, if that civ has access to your site. Migrants and Liasons are taken from real historical figures, and I think attackers should be too. You might not get human babysnatchers or ambushes because humans don't have those as traits, but I'm not sure if those aspects are attached to race or to civilisation...

I've seen Human Babysnatchers. It's a job that some humans elect to take.

If you do get a siege, let folks know, because that presents some very interesting possibilities.

Like human siegers attacking human caravan?

In my experience with baby-snatcher civs, historical figures will lead squads, but the rest of the squads will be generated for the siege or ambush, from the original race of the civilization.
