Splinter Cell: Conviction

The new game is out and it's pretty good. If you liked Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 and the original Splinter Cell then you should be pretty happy. It blends some stealth action with good cover shooting mechanics and a great pacing for a stealth game(mostly it's just a good shooter with lots of stealth opportunities.
Also a big part of the game is completing optional achievements(pulling a certain number of people out of windows) for points that can be redeemed for upgrading weapons and gadgets. Decent story, decent voice acting, almost unique graphic style and good fun gameplay make this a decent game to watch for when the price drops a bit. Nice co-op multiplayer too!

I found the co op campaign alot better than the single player story.

If you buy this, make sure to play it through with a friend too!

I played the demo.

I have mix feelings on it. Overall, I think its a great game. Its a great example what a triple A title should be.

However, it is not a Splinter Cell game to me. It feels more like what Borne movie franchise games should have played as.

Its super actiony, and the demo was excellently paced. I felt like I was always moving forward getting shit done and I was the most badass motherfucker in the room.

It however no longer a stealth game. Its a third person action adventure title with well polished stealth mechanics. (And that is nice. A lot of them you see the stealth mechanics get tactic on, and done badly.)

It from my play through was no longer the emphasis. It was no longer the point of the game.

It also no longer about Sam Fischer and Escholoen(sp) Six stopping near future political turmoils, which was a part of its Tom Clancy name sake.

The direction its going in is good. I like seeing continue adventure Sam Fischer. I find him to be an interesting complex character.

It should have done a title change, like Dark Forces game as it evolved and change focuses.

It also deemphasis Fischer age. It was a b plot point that Fischer was getting old. However in Conviction he is kicking ten kinds of ninja ass like he is in the prime of life.

I'm not sure how I feel about the retconing of Sarah death though. I was displeased with it at first, as it really felt out of no where and serve no purpose other then to give a back drop to the crappy Double Agent game. It was a crappy back drop

Most of issues with it are not with the game itself but with how the franchise is being handled.

Playing this with a friend, mostly co-op...  I did some single player...  but havn't touched it since.  So a lot of guns are still locked out for me... >.>

Just finished all the Last Stand Co-op missions on realistic with friend last night.
On the last mission and last wave... I randomly picked up an M4... which I have never used before...  The M4 a freaking silenced headshot enabling weapon of doom... then I ran out of ammo.
No wonder why he is normally mowing people down while I am doing less with the ol' melee, mark and kill tactic...

Honestly, never was a fan of the series, still not... but the co-op with friend is its main point, in my opinion anyways... I'd not have touched this otherwise.

How does co-op work storywise. Are there two Sam Fishers? Does he have some sort of partner?

I haven't played any Splinter Cell since #1, but this interested me since they announced it however long ago for its Bourneyness.

Nah, there are no Sam Fishers in Co-op story.  Basically you get a Russian and an American doing things the Sam Fisher way.  This story is supposed to pre-empt the Sam Fisher story.  Maybe.  I didn't finish single player.

I dont think I spoiled anything of the game story. The only thing I spoke to about was two? maybe three games ago. The last Splinter Cell title on the PS2. If I did, apologies, and if someone could point them out I'll edit my post with spoiler in place.

It was a hell lot less of Splinter Cell and more Shooty shooty.

Quite sad.

The interrogations are awesome, though I have no idea why they named it splinter cell. As pretty much everyone says: it doesn't play at all like any of the other splinter cell games. Splinter cell for me was always about using all teh gadgets and tricks sam fisher had, to sneak past baddies and take them out in awesome ways. Now it seems to be a generic 3rd person shooter with a flashy cover system. The last known position thing makes everything extremely easy.

Someone in a review i read (mightve been on RPS) said that splinter cell was always about finding a safe place, and venturing out to progress to another safe place. Each time you left you were trading security for progress, which created a huge sense of tension. If the enemies saw you, because every fight that you didn't have control over put you at a huge disadvantage, which encouraged you to use all your vision modes and gadgets to be aware of everything around you.

Now you just never really feel in danger at all, all the tension is gone. Its just running from cover to cover taking down bad guys.

Tried the coop with a friend, and we basically just steamrolled through. Didn't find it worth playing at all other than the fact its one of the few mutliplayer 360 games that let you splitscreen.

Waiting on someone to crack the Ubisoft DRM on this one  ;)

No way I'm paying them for software that I can't use when router is spazzing out (often)

I think its unfair to call this a generic 3rd person shooter. Sam is very recognizable, and it still keeping to the color pallet of the previous games. Atheistically I think it is still splinter cell.

Its no more generic then that it shares commonality within its genre. The interrogation, mark and call shots and enemy AI are very much it own person in this game. The enemy AI from what I played in the demo reminded me a lot of the previous AI in its earlier games.

Well yeah, it still kinda looks like splinter cell. And the interogations are cool as I said. But it's not about stealth anymore.

You cant knock on walls to lure enemies too you. You only have that one crappy vision mode that doesn't work when you move, and lets you see through walls. I've not played splinter cell in a long time, but I'm pretty sure you used to get more than one vision mode (night vision and heat vision?). The focus has shifted from stealh game to third person shooter. Thats what I was getting at.
