So...
Worldgen continues after worldgen in this version now, right? That is to say sites will be formed and taken over and develop, especially if you stop worldgen is year 2...That is IIRC, of coarse.

What if we were to stop worldgen as early as possible, then take DEMON_1, mod in a gender, make then an entity, then just play around with any mega projects you can think off in that world until a demon civilization shows up.

Possible?

EDIT: That being said, I'd love to see how thick you could stack the bodies before you either got bored or ran out of memory.
As thick as FPS allows. Then, apply magma.

Unpleasant results, coming in.  Got an interesting age name, "Age of the Sky," but turns out that was only because the age was named after a Swamp Titan, Ÿonali Naturalblisters the Whiskered Sky.
Anyways, I genned a world with several variants of funbats:
Base funbats were unmodified.
GI (genderless immortal) funbats had no maxage, no gendered castes, and [NO_GENDER].
GF (genderless fading) funbats had a maxage ranging from 10 to 1010, no gendered castes, and [NO_GENDER].
GD (genderless doomed) funbats had a maxage ranging from 10 to 15, no gendered castes, and [NO_GENDER].
GF and GF testbats were identical to their funbat versions, except with [DEMON] and [UNDERGROUND_DEPTH:5:5], removed, and their biome changed to [ANY_LAND].

My theory was that unmodded and GI bats would do just fine, GF funbats would be on the verge of extinction, and GD funbats would be nonexistant.  I genned a world with no demon types (manually added demons always appear) set to stop at year 1000 regardless of megabeast population.  Results?

   Unnumbered GI funbats
   Unnumbered funbats
   Unnumbered GF funbats
   Unnumbered GD funbats
   2681 GD testbats
   2173 GF testbats

This calls my entire experimental procedure into question.  I had assumed that creatures without gendered castes, and [NO_GENDER] would not breed, even during worldgen.  Clearly, they do so.  Either there is something I missed that enables such creatures to breed anyways, or worldgen doesn't actually bother checking whether or not breeding is actually possible.  Arena spawned GD testbats are described as "it," so I am forced to assume the latter.

EDIT: Raws used in experiment.  If anyone can see an error, point it out.

I'm fairly certain that basic animals are "spawned" rather than bred.  If their populations get too low, more are created on the spot. 

Civilizations are tracked and measured, but the game appears to be a little less concerned with the details of wild animals.  After all, we frequently see high numbers of the genetically doomed naked mole dogs running about.

Not to mention the various blobs, balls, and $foomen, who have no method of breeding at all.  While it is more than likely that they would have been killed off during any reasonably long worldgen, they still appear in numerous locales.

Megabeasts and Semimegas are also tracked, but I don't know if they're capable of breeding.  Even if they are, they tend to be loners by nature and will most likely not be near enough to another specimen to get their National Geographic on.

Theoretically, it would be limited to the number spawned in the beginning of time.  I'm fairly certain that Semimegas don't get respawned over the course of worldgen.  A high number of caves seems to help support a thriving number of semi-megabeasts.

Nothing new to add; I haven't forgotten this project, but I'll not be on it for a while due to some other things.  This is proving harder than I thought, so I'll probably return to it if I get any bolts of inspiration.  I might toy with Side Projects if I feel like it, though.

FPS would not be much of a problem for the demon spike trap discussed, since you could implement both (a) a magma flush, assuming you used magmaproof devices, to clear the excess bodies, and (b) an obsidian-casting "door", for when you needed relief from the waves of demons.

Now, if you can inject funbats into hell, a way of finding out how infinite the demon waves are suggests itself.
Simply make a form of funbat that is completely indestructible - like a hundred bronze collosi tied together, with breath weapons and no-tire and webs and all that - and make them [CAN_LEARN], and slam them into hell.
Open up a fortress, and the funbat population should start slaughtering the demons (you may have to uncap hell for this). So you'll get a continuous tally of demon deaths, without having to lift a finger.

Am I right?

You could just change the dwarven body into pure adamantine/slade/some modded, awesome material that is an alloy of both and can be used to create a random forgotten beast at a workshop.

just to be clear on this, and revive a thread that is desperately needed for the sake of conquering hell;

When you say the creature IDs of the demons are all in the format DEMON_#, does that mean to say we can overwrite them with a creature in the raws by giving them the same ID? If so, we could bring back the old HFS, and control what appears in our worlds by limiting the demon count to '# of demons we make in raws + # we can endure being randomly generated'

I think I'll test this and see if it works...

It may also be wise to add such knowledge to the wiki?
