On fortress mode how do i command a dwarf to pick somthing up?[if i can]

How do i command a dwarf to pick up a weapon and use it.

Can we be a bit more specific here? You can get them to pick up axes and picks by assigning the job to them, and you can assign them weapons on the  military screen (don't ask me how, still puzzeling it out), but that's it.

To get them to place items in certain locations, you need to set up stockpiles (the p key)
