How do you mod something to produce a shell?
« on: April 28, 2010, 08:49:57 pm »

This damn shell bug has cost me too many dwarves and I'm sick of it.  How can I mod in like, armor plated cows or something?  I know absolutely nothing about modding.

Oh and will the change take affect only after a new world gen?

Que the snail cows!
First step. in the [BODY: tag, at the end, add :SHELL

Now under the [BODY_DETAIL_PLAN:STANDARD_MATERIALS] add [USE_MATERIAL_TEMPLATE:SHELL:SHELL_TEMPLATE]

And finaly under [BODY_DETAIL_PLAN:STANDARD_TISSUES] add [USE_TISSUE_TEMPLATE:SHELL:SHELL_TEMPLATE]

For an existing world, go into data/save/region1 or whatever you have, then into the raws. Open up material_template_default and hit CTRL+F.

Search for [HORN]. Add [SHELL] right underneath.
Search again and add [SHELL] under again.

Basically, you've modded horns and hooves to be used in place of shells. Much easier than adding in new creatures or modding existing ones to have shells.

Sorry Max, I didn't even see your reply when I posted mine. Nothing personal. :P

Just figured modding more than what I posted is a lot more complicated. Doesn't seem as farfetched either when giving cows or cats shells. :P

Relax, I know it was nothing personal. I joke around a fair amount like that.

But since when did farfetched have a negative inclination?

So I like the idea of a snail cow.  Where do I do this?  In my save raws like the other guy said?

Ok will the young also have shells?  Or do I have to do them separately?

Nope, they grow shells when you mod the parents.

Awesome, thanks.  It seems to have worked, though as soon as I butchered the animal, the dwarf went insane.  Berserk, at that, which normally isn't a problem but this guy was one of my military dwarves, and he's +2 Legendary Macedwarf.  Sigh, that's DF for you.

But the shell is there in the body parts menu, so I'm assuming it'll work out.

Actually I think it's crashing my game now.  Whenever I 't' over the butcher shop, it crashes.  I deconstructed it and let everything spill out and when I 'k' over certain things, it crashes as well.

Double checked my work and it's all as you typed out.  Do I need to change it in the base raws too?  Not just the save game ones?

Oh geeze, sorry about that, let me see what I forgot.

Could you post the raws for the creature in question?

Spoiler: Cow RAW (click to show/hide)

And editing it in both places didn't fix it.
