A firefly has comprimised my fortress security.
« on: April 28, 2010, 06:46:00 pm »

Okay, I've read about this happening, and I've had it happen to me several times, resulting in goblin-related dwarf massacres, but I've searched for a solution to no avail. There is a firefly corpse stuck in my fortress' front door. I've claimed it and marked it for dumping, but no one ever bothers to get it out of the door.

Once and for all, how can I get my dwarves to debug the security system?

Magma?

Yes. Clearly a bug that ought to be fixed in the future, but exploit it in the meantime.

Ah, of course. A monarch butterfly once compromised the security of Boatmurdered.

In any case, check to see if your dwarves are set to gather refuse from the outside.

Build a wall either side of the entrance, and more it forward/backward one space.

Ahhh! That I actually did resort to last fortress, and as soon as the new door was ready?

NYEEEERM RACCOON INTO SAWBLADES and I was back in the same boat.

Aye! That did it! Thanks much, you've saved dozens of dwarven lives here today.

A safer alternative in general is to use Floodgates, Grates, or Bridges for your main entrace, since they'll just destroy anything caught in them instead of getting stuck open.

floodgates jam as well. I find grates dug over a pit never jam, are not vulnerable to building destroyer 2's ability to negate, and can be filled with magma/pit straight down to hell/magma sea/tame GCS cave/etc
