Help for the helpless 3.0
« on: April 28, 2010, 04:51:29 pm »

Is there any standard for importing/exporting other peoples dwarves beetween games? I am a bit worried that nothing bad will ever happen the fort im tracking. So far the worst that has happened is a cougar eating a cat (wich he payed for dearly!(<url>http://lodestones.wordpress.com/page/2/</url>)  and later on it would be awsome if i could "drop" someone else's dwarf/goblinarmy/beast into the fort.  My little guys are getting restless, dwarven ssacrafices to Armok surely will follow.

Sadly, this would require a truly remarkable breakthrough in memory hacking; no utility currently exists that's capable of what your requesting.

I still think that the whole fortress should be flooded with magma the moment you try dividing by zero.
This could be a handy way of teaching preschool children mathematics.

The closest you could get to that is using Dwarf Companion to change an an existing creature to another one. (Change  cat into a dwarf, change it's civ to yours, change it's name to what you want it to be, change the skills to what you want them to be) Unfortunately, Dwarf Companion has yet to be updated, however there is progress on that front.

I know it's unrealistic, but I can't help but imagine little bearded babies for dwarves. In my mind, they come out of the womb fully bearded. That's how the mother carries them around, too, she just drags them around by the beard or ties it to her belt. When the father's on duty, he just ties their beards together and the baby just kind of hangs there, swinging to and fro with Urist McDaddy's movements.

I an starting to think that I should have started my fort with 40d, ::)
I didnt count on not being able to use many of the utilities available for older versions,
I especially need a good visualizer program.
its too late now though, I have already put too much time into my fort to give up now ^^
Oh well, maby it will turn out for the best in the long run eh?

Ill try the tool you suggested Calhoun, if it is updated any time in the next year, thanks.

Its too bad something like this doesn't exist, I would love to be able to incorperate other peoples stories into my own.

Ill have to find some other way of spicing things up.....

I have another question, whats a good way to get stockpiles to use their bins and barrels instead of just tossing stuff on the floor? Also; If I drain a pool underground, and plug the drain back up, will it fill with rainwater? I have noticed channeled holes don't fill, are ponds special?

Murky pools will fill up with rain, nothing else should though.

Er. The should bin/barrel things as needed, provided you have bins/barrels. Not ALL Things are binnable but most are (Rocks/ores aren't, Blocks/Bars are).

Check the stockpile settings though, just incase.

If you're worried about things not being spicy enough, just dig deeper.  Something interesting ought to happen.

There is a non-official version of Stonesense that works with 31.03, if you count that as a visualizer.

Another question: Can I alter the settler cap halfway through a game? And, can I cage an innocent dwarf, or chain him?

Settler cap? Population cap you mean? if so, Yes. Just change the numbers in the INit file, though expect to see 1 wave of migrants after you hit the number you set.

the only way to cage a dwarf would be to knock him out and on to a cage trap, you could engineer a cave-in to do it. but it'd be a little hard. No way to chain him.
