What color is adamantine?
« on: April 28, 2010, 04:46:20 pm »

As I imagine many of you do, I like to imagine my Dwarves in a little more graphical glory than ASCII. Usually this works pretty well... but! I've run into a problem...

What color is smelted adamantine? As in, if I make a sword out of it, what color will it be? I know what steel, bronze or copper look like... but adamantine?

Is it blue? Is it a pale green? Is it like steel? Does it glow like a lightsaber?

What do you think?

It's cyan.

Light blue/cyan, like unsmelted adamantine is.

Tarran has the "Tarran Bug", a bug which causes the affected character to repeatedly hit teammates while dual-wielding instead of whatever the hell he is shooting at.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adamant
It's very popular in folklore, but no one agrees. In a google image search for it, I got coppery, silvery, blue-glowy, and most of all, rainbowy.

I'd bet cyan since Adamant bars are cyan.

And then it's pretty much a normal fortress from then on.
I find the idea of a normal fortress amusing.

Bu-but... cyan looks crappy :(

Blood red weapons? Hell yeah. Black? Awesome. Blinding white? Glittery.

But cyan, damn. WTF.

Just think of it as a pure metal with a faint, glowing blue luster to it.

I like to think of it as the DF equivalent to mithril in Lord of the Rings, which would make it silver with a hint of blue (perhaps explaining why cyan is chosen to show it in-game).

In other video games it ranges from very dark gray to pale green...

For the true DF answer, you'd need to ask Toady  ;)

I think the cyan is badass.

Whenever i read the "doesn't care about anything anymore" line, i instantly imagine a dwarf, sitting alone on a swing set. Just slowly rocking back and forth, somberly staring at the ground, and stopping every once in a while to sigh.
It's mildly depressing.

I guess because I am resistant to the concept of realistic material appearances even in a game that injects as much realism as seems possible into a setting teeming with dwarves and elves, I've always imagined adamantine to look like glacier ice.  Not quite transparent but not opaque like a mundane metal, blue from light but not necessarily blue and of itself.

Well, that's certainly imaginative.

I think that adamantine is such a magical substance, that no two lodes are identical.  So, in my theory, you could all be right; then again, we could likewise all be wrong.

(Now I've got to go and mod in some new colors of adamantine...)

Hmmm, I like the idea of a light blue color... maybe a soft, magical glow too.

Though on the other hand, imagining dwarves dressed in light blue armor is a little... eh...

If your mind likes Realism over fantasy it could very well look like aerogel
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Its typically a bluish substance and has a ridiculously low density. It is also an extraordinary insulator
