Well, go with my theory, and it could very well be red...

If your mind likes Realism over fantasy it could very well look like aerogel
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Its typically a bluish substance and has a ridiculously low density. It is also an extraordinary insulator

*blink* Wow... if I didn't have Google/Wikipedia to prove it, I'd say you were messing with me...

That. Is. Awesome!

A very hard mostly-clear foamlike substance with a slight cyan colored luminecence.  Raw adamantine has a very sharp, rough texture, capable of easily slicing open the hand if handled wrong, even through thick gloves.  And is found in thick strands interwoven through rock. When heated to 10140 U, the adamantine gains a plastic consistency, and loses it's sharp edges, allowing it to be very easily shaped even by hand. All attempts to truly melt the materiel have ended in failure. When re-cooled the adamantine does not regain it's rough sharp texture, instead becoming incredibly smooth.  However, if the adamantine is worked into a thin shape the edges gain an extrodinary sharpness, sharper than any other materiel known.

Although the materiel is far too light for use in arrows or blunt weapons,  The incredible hardness combined with it's light weight make ideal armor.  Even clothing woven of this materiel has shown potential as impenetrable armor, although more testing needs to be done in that area.  The materiels sharpness also shows potential use in bladed weapons, such as swords, spears, and axes.

^^
That would be how I see Adamantine.

Without any further ado, I give you:

*Drumroll; Trumpets*
MULTICOLOR ADAMANTINE!

And there you have it!  Every vein of adamantine you come across will be a random color, but they all have the same stats as each other.  (That's a project for another day...)

Hmm I've always thought of adamantine as being of a greener variety.

I too see it as a silvery-light blue metal. I do so want it to mesh up with LotR.
Did you know Tolkein used adamantine as one of mithril's many many names? Therefore:
Adamantine=Mithril

The most common I've seen is cyan, blue-ish grey, and green.
Personally, I like to change color of cyan in the raws from this to this.

Damn you canalan, I was just hurrying to the second page to mention mithril. But yes, Mithril is essentially adamantine.

You can change the colours in the ini... the wiki has lists of different colour bits - let me see... *mutters about Americans and the wiki not recognising the word "colour"*

http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Color_scheme

Just pick the colours you'd like to change and put in the new RGB attributes and bam, the colours you want! I use one of the natural schemes myself, so I don't feel like ripping my eyes out when I find microcline.

So Ledi's been training the cats into an army of disposable warbeasts?  Why did no-one think of this sooner?!
Hellcannon seemed to be constantly on the verge of death and Levergedon before my turn helped, but ultimately what killed it was Ledi's cat army.

Well if we're going to go on precedent, isn't wolverine's skeleton and claws covered in adamantine?

Ignoring the fact that its a different genre entirely that suggests a greyish color

I could be mistaken however, not an expert on comics
