The nightgaunts are free-willed so long as they perform their duty as defined by Astra'ath. If you'd allow them to stay there while still doing the nightmare thing, then some would stay and hear you out. They may even be swayed. Their loyalty isn't compelled in any way, its just what they believe and their minds could be changed.
