...Are you saying time can't be a dimension like spatial dimensions because that would mess up numbering of dimensions?

I think the argument is merely that any reference to the fourth dimension is misleading.  No dimension is specifically the fourth one (as opposed to the first, second, or third, or whatever else), except from the perspective of adding additional dimensions to an existing theoretical model.

Time can definitely be a dimension.  It can be one dimension within a four-dimensional model.  But to say that it is the fourth dimension is simply noting that we typically start off thinking about a three-dimensional model, and then realize that we can create a new and useful model by including time as a fourth dimension.

But it's still acceptable to say that something is 4-dimensional if you are including time as one of it's dimensional properties.

This is getting into logic more than physics now, but really what's being said is that:

An object with properties { X, Y, Z, Time } is four-dimensional.

BUT

An object that is four-dimensional does not necessarily have to have the properties { X, Y, Z, Time }.

It's deductive reasoning vs. inductive reasoning.

So I don't sound stupid (impossible, I know), the merge will also allow a Mac version, right?
Not necessarily.  There were Mac versions before the 40dX series.
The 40d# versions use SDL, which takes out all the OS-dependent I/O and graphics code and puts it in an external library.  This makes porting to Mac a heck of a lot easier.

He's currently trying to keep Scamps from destroying everything in the house, including his computer, by the sound of the devlog.

It is futile. Scamps has IGNORE_DAMBLOCK.

I still want to know how Toady simultaneously knocked the tower over, popped the case open, and dropped his phone into the now-open computer.

Maybe he's working on parallelism.

I mean, unless he already had the case open or something, it's physically impossible to dislodge it with a knee (or even a foot)
...Especially since they usually have (thumb)screws.

I keep my computer's case unscrewed but covered for easy acess. A strong bump can dislodge it. The part about the phone falling on the computer still is a mystery though.

I really want that one as a "when". I want "grubs", and "virgin woman" to turn into a dragon. and monkey children to suddenly sprout wings. And I want the Dwarven Mutant Academy to only gain their powers upon reaching puberty. I also have a whole host of odd creatures that only make sense if I divide them into children and adults.

Also, tadpoles.

Perhaps this talk of hyper-dimensional space will reveal how you can give a hyperactive cat a 'time out'.
Loads of stuff about higher dimensions
The infamous string theory demands at least 10 spacial dimensions on top of a time dimension (or 11, I don't recall), so our Special Relativity Prof usually refereed to Time as the 0th dimension, to 'avoid confusion' (yeah, right), which always left me with a nagging question: What if there were 2 time dimensions?

Now on the actual topic: What exactly does Toady mean with 'merging code'? Doesn't he code the new versions in the same way as the previous version or something like that? If not, why not?

the D## series wasn't by Toady, it was forumpeoples. So he has to merge their code from 40D## into the main 0.31 code so we can get all the goodness of the 40D## series (png support, speed boost, and the rest) with the good yet seriously bugged 0.31 version.

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.

The 40d# versions were written against the 40d source (or parts of it). The 40d source evolved in a separate branch and became Pikatchu 31, and now Toady has to make it so that the 40d# parts and the 31 parts can mesh again.

At the risk of derailing a derailment, has anybody got a guesstimate on when the next patch will come out?  I'm new here so I don't really know what the development cycle is, and I dig that Toady's a busy guy but I am getting very frustrated by what are apparently a couple of bugs in the .31's military/combat system.  Just wondering if we're looking at a few days/weeks or not to expect anything until Thanksgiving, and all his announcements lately have been about the code merge.

No one exactly knows how long this will take for the next update (which will include some hospital, fish, river, and rain fixes + the 40d# merge). But based on a rough estimation from how long it's been since the last update and from the time Toady made a log on the merge. I'm betting it'll be a week to two weeks before 0.31.04 is out. He got most of the screens in place form what I heard. The only thing that is still left unknown is if there has been any form of delay thanks to Scamp's rampage that put Toady's computer at risk. (Not that he'd have to worry, he has a boatload of donations to replace it if needed.)

The next release will probably be soon, but the vast majority of the military/combat bugs aren't getting fixed yet.

Well, someone had to do it:

Scamps charges at Toady One!
Toady One looks surprised by the ferocity of Scamps onslaught!
Scamps scratches Toady One in the left upper arm!
Scamps collides with Toady One!
Toady One is knocked over and tumbles backward!
Toady One slams into an obstacle!
Toady One hits The Computer in the case with his right lower leg, jamming it open!
The spinning Mobile Phone strikes The Computer in the motherboard, but the attack glances away!

The spinning Tantrum Spiral strikes The Fortress in the meeting hall!
It explodes in gore!
The Fortress has been struck down.
