I think it would be neat if the loving dwarfs was able to to be able to find out whats a couple to titles from where they are digging or anything dealing with the walls(eg stone smoothing).  like when People in geography use a large shock wave and sensors to help to figure out whats underground.

The word you're looking for is geology and this has been suggested a few times, along with dowsing and other 'rock sense' abilities.   Toady's stated he's unsure on if and how to implement it.
