"Just some gems?" You can find more gems than Kay can wave a stick at.

You can find something else that's shiny but also fantastic for armor and bladed weapons.

Lots of raw materials, especially minerals and gems.  Also, muddied soil for farming (and once fishing is fixed), a lot of good fishing grounds.  Another advantage is that once you breach the cavern, underground plants start growing in any subterranean soil; especially if you've got a cavern very close to the surface, you can set up underground tree and forage farms to supply a solid trickle of wood and additional plants.

Of course, the downside is that I've had to deal with a forgotten beast every year...I figure we're taming the caverns, one blood soaked year at a time.

Do you always look at it in ASCII?

You get used to it, I don't even see the ASCII.  All I see is blacksmith, miner, goblin.

I managed to wall up an entire cavern, you can build walls at the very edges of the map in caverns, so seal them off and it will keep ANYthing from coming in (make sure to do the upper levels as well so fliers can't get in).  I'm setting up tunnels at the edge with a tethered animal and cage traps to see if I can catch whatever happens to come in (though if it's one of THOSE things, I'll just abandon the tunnel).

Might as well ask this here:  a giant cave swallow flew in right before I finished the last bit, got him locked in a bedroom.  Any suggestions on how to trap him?  I had a cage trap set up, but he just flew right past it.  Don't really want to cause a cave-in, it's in my nice bedroom area right under a major river.  It does freeze in the winter, however, only for a little while.

Urist mcmermaid: But I want to see the caverns!
Urist mclobster: Urist, let me tell you something...

Under the sea, under the sea
Darlin' it's better
Down where it's wetter,
Take it from me!

... I'm tempted to try rewriting the lyrics to be about cagetraps and mermaid breeding/butchering.

(1) As mentioned, underground plants start sprouting everywhere once you've breached the caves.  (In odd ways, albeit--the red sand layer beneath the surface that I was prepping for above-ground plants grew a dozen saplings and shrubs; the black sand layer beneath and directly connected to the -1 plots has remained barren.  Either way, though, I have dimple cups without even bothering to bring the seeds on embark.)

(2)  Critters.  CRITTERS EVERYWHERE!  The twisty, narrow passages make it easy to a) protect your web-gatherers with traps, and therefore b) create a huge menagerie for your fort.  Now if I can only figure out how to trap and contain that giant olm...  screw megaprojects; I'm making a legendary zoo!  :]
