I had something similar. they die pretty easy against serrated discs. But then again anything but slashing and piercing weapons seem useless at the moment.

The best way to deal with these suckers, if you don't have a fortress going yet, is to dig a cellar and stow your food there.  If there is only one stairway or one tile leading in there it is easy to keep the buzzards away, by posting a guy or chaining a dog there.

What I can't figure out is, are these guys "summoned" by exposed food laying on the ground (in deserts/wastelands) or do they just randomly spawn on the map like other animals, but unlike other critters make a beeline to the food?

Sadly, they cannot be eaten themselves.  :(

Curious_beast type creatures like rhesus macaques seem to spawn only when invasions are enabled. I'd guess their arrival is therefore not random. Since buzzards are also curious_beasts, I imagine their arrival is determined by similar factors.

Does anyone know of later fortresses with deep underground stockpiles where buzzards have been an issue?

Twenty one kills for my dog, and a bunch of stew for my dwarves. They stole a stawberry though, those bastards!

Been dealing with buzzards too, but of the skeletal variety.

One thing that gets me is "skeletal buzzard guzzles strawberry wine!".  Where does it go?

Past it's skeletal throat, to it's skeletal stomach, of course.

Y'know, I remember once saying something about training Buzzards to deter kobold thieves. If they manage to get anything, your highly trained War Buzzard will steal it back and take his loincloth.

Wait, would that work? Because if so, I have a new military faction!

Buzzards + cage traps is even worse. I now have dozens of them in animals stockpile and have no idea what to do with them.
I tried to use them as practice targets for military, but they die too fast and give almost no exp. Hoary marmots work much better (i never managed to kill one with training axe/sword, unlike buzzard) and dont fight back.

I think Buzzards may be a prequel to Toady introducing cross-site stealing squads. So, you got Adamantine, and made an artifact worth over 90 million dwarfbucks out of it? Trained buzzards from all over the realm scramble over, jamming all of your 2500 weapon traps, and move on barely damaged. Then they kill the guy who made the artifact and take it from his dead hands just as he leaves the forges.
