These Buzzards are gettin' on my nerves!
« on: April 26, 2010, 06:07:40 pm »

So, these annoying buzzards attacked me at embark. They attack my people and steal my food. I only have one warrior, and he's been charging everywhere, BUT THEY JUST WON'T DIE!

I'd suggest digging out a temporary shelter and moving your food inside. Line the entrance with cage traps, then any buzzards flying in will be caught.

This guy gets it, the problem with the child torture dungeon is that they weren't set on fire first.

I bet they were attracted by my extra plump helmets.
Well, they've stolen about 15 plump helmets and 5 cave lobsters.

yeah,  I've been amazed at them as well.

I've found that putting a dog tied at the entrance helps.

When I embark, I immediately wall in all of my stockpiles, and post a dog at the only entrance.  They don't tend to come near the dogs.

Heh, I had buzzards swooping into a keep and stealing the food stored there from the keep's roof access stairs. Made me build a hatch to keep them out.

Yea, I embarked on a glacier and a hole swarm of them came in and took everything, even a small child.

I know, that never happened, I just wanted to be part of the conversation.  :P

I was able to fend off buzzards, though I eventually abandoned anyways due to the massive sea of blood covering the entire map once I had defeated them.

Everyone was always at the well trying to wash the blood off, but the blood would never wash off.

Out, damn'd spot!

The best way to deal with these suckers, if you don't have a fortress going yet, is to dig a cellar and stow your food there.  If there is only one stairway or one tile leading in there it is easy to keep the buzzards away, by posting a guy or chaining a dog there.

What I can't figure out is, are these guys "summoned" by exposed food laying on the ground (in deserts/wastelands) or do they just randomly spawn on the map like other animals, but unlike other critters make a beeline to the food?

Sadly, they cannot be eaten themselves.  :(

Weapon traps seem effective if you force them through it's tile.

In 40d I have a fort with a line of 30 serrated glass discs.

And then it's pretty much a normal fortress from then on.
I find the idea of a normal fortress amusing.
