How long can a well bucket be lowered?

 Is there a limit to how high I can make one of these googaws?

I've had a 40z level well worked fine in my last fort, you can see it being lowered and raised too, its pretty cool. I dont think theres a limit.

Yea, theoretically you could do it a thousand z-levels up but it would take quite a while. The further the bucket has to go, the longer it takes.

well, now someone must check and see if a well can be made so tall that a dorf dies of thirst before he can get the bucket back. . . .

Better yet, this implies that the length of a single piece of rope is infinite. Or at least many many zlvls. I feel the need to gen a very very tall map to test this...
