A method for applying poison
« on: April 26, 2010, 08:13:16 am »

Currently, the method I have discovered for applying poisons is to create a poisonous blob that sprays poison vapor in every direction in combat.

[MATERIAL_BREATH_ATTACK:LOCAL_CREATURE_MAT:FLUID:UNDIRECTED_VAPOR]

The vapor, however, is injection/blood-only so it will not harm creatures directly. The blob itself is also basically harmless.

The creature is then chained to an ammo store-room and all ammunition is now coated in poison. By making the poison fast-acting I then enable dwarves to have their own poisoned crossbows.

So far this has been the only way I can think to weaponize syndromes effectively. Has anyone else come up with other ideas?

Have you managed to successfully test it, or is it still theoretical?

I have managed to test it, though getting the cloud to trigger is sometimes a bit of a pain (works fine if the creature is just wandering around). Everything in the area is coated, everything will infect the target if it deals damage. The mist will also harm any dwarfs with open wounds, but that is a relatively minor problem.

So indirect breath attacks work outside of combat?
Wells thats handy!

Perhaps I should clarify. The problem with indirect breath attacks is that they don't trigger outside of combat, and initiating it at the right location is the problem.

It will however poison all weapons in the area.

Ah, I see.
What if you put a creature behind some bars that was immune to the poisen?

The poison does nothing without an open wound, you could even eat food laced with the stuff and you would be fine.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

That is what I used for the blob, I haven't experimented with it a great deal, but likely will later. I am working on a setting where different civilizations use very different sorts of weapons.

Make B the blob and C a creature or goblin, both behind a screen. The small b is stacks of bolts. I don't know how many rows of bolts you can fit in the radius, also you could add bolts to the other side of the creature.

It just occurred to me that you could combine this technique with castes to make some members of a given species innately capable of applying poison to their fellows' weapons.

thats an interesting way to poison weapons good idea :) ive been using bio-bombs aka cats modded to drop a boulder that boils at 9000 (just below room temp) it causes instant necrosis massive pain stops your heart and permenently paralyses you. so rather efective against anything

Hmm, one way to do that would be breeding cave blobs as livestock (maybe adding the proper tags), then you would put your ammo in a small room, dump a blob and a gobo in it, then get your ammo. (and get rid of the gobo)

I really want that one as a "when". I want "grubs", and "virgin woman" to turn into a dragon. and monkey children to suddenly sprout wings. And I want the Dwarven Mutant Academy to only gain their powers upon reaching puberty. I also have a whole host of odd creatures that only make sense if I divide them into children and adults.

Also, tadpoles.

What IF:
- make a barrel that would disintegrate at ~10100U (on tile near magma)
- put poisonous blood inside this barrel
- make ammo stockpile above magma
- drop barrels there

Whould that cover those weapons/ammo? In short: would it work?

Boiling bolders wont reliably cover weapons. Right now I just sorta wish I could make them spray more consistently. Is there a way I could make them both guard animals and insane, so they will attack anything that moves but be chained to a wall?

Has anyone experimented with boiling secretions that will condense upon touching a cold surface? Using a secretion rather than a breath attack would mean it does not need prompting to coat the ammunition in poison.
