Does adamantine still bring the king?
« on: April 25, 2010, 10:02:41 pm »

So now that channeling into the magma sea is usually enough to discover adamantine has anyone seen an adamantine king yet? or does that no longer happen in DF2010? I usually build small forts so haven't seen any nobles yet much less the king, but various difficulties usually keep my forts from lasting very long in this version... so I don't really know.

So, anyone seen the king yet? :)

The king doesn't come early thanks to Adamantine any longer.  Which is good, since the stuff is virtually impossible to avoid now.

Indeed. As soon as you breach the magma sea, you will probably see "Raw adamantine! Praise the miners!"

I never understood why the king used to come when I found Adamantine, like he expected me to deal with HFS right away or something.

Well, he probably doesn't know about the hidden fun stuff and even if he does know, you need adamantine to fight the fun stuff and guess where the supply is?

The King of the Dwarfs is the greediest of the greedy. When he hears about adamantine, he wants to be on site immediately to get his cut of the loot.

The King of the Dwarfs is the greediest of the greedy. When he hears about adamantine, he wants to be on site immediately to get his cut of the loot.

The problem is, he wants to live there, even if it is a 3 month old hole in the ground with a scrappy patch of farm and 3 wooden tables for a dining hall.  He survives the journey through the wilderness without even a single bodyguard to protect him.  He comes dressed as a peasant with no belongings, none of the gold trinkets or battle souvenirs that you might expect a King to find difficult to part with.

Then he goes mad and dies because it's not up to his Royal standards.  The guy's a lunatic.

I never understood how it was hard to not meet the king's requirements. You just make raw adamantine statues and put them in his rooms, it's like royal viagra.

Such a waste for when you could be making kickass armor or weapons.  Anyway just dig 4 very large rooms and stick the over the required amount of coffers, cabinets, weapon racks, and armor stands in them.  Smooth them and throw in a few statues too.

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

Also, there's a million ways to please nobles using the results of strange moods. For example, you can stick a legendary weapon [in my case, a granite warhammer] into a weapon trap in the nobles room, and it'll count as furniture. My mayor's room was unsmoothed, with terrible furniture owing to the loss of my carpenters and my best mason. He saw that nice hammer trap and cheered right up.

Considering it takes 3 raw adamatine to make 1 weapon, and you only need 4 statues if you've kept your mason busy, you don't lose very much.

I think the main reason adamantine no longer brings the king is because it's included on every map now.

I thought that was a bug... Whatever. As far as I thought, it takes three wafers to equal one bar, at least in 40d.
