can i use controls from 40d?
« on: April 25, 2010, 07:20:42 pm »

Hey, this is my first time posting on these boards, been playing DF for a while, trying to get back into the game with 31, but the new controls are really putting me off... anyone know of a way to use the old control scheme in the new version?

As far as I'm aware, the only control change was that ESC now cancels out of menus instead of SPACE...yeah, that was a little annoying for me.  You can change it in-game with ESC->Options I think.

EDIT: And make sure to press the button that saves it to text so you don't have to re-do it every time.

What new controls do you mean exactly?

If it's the escape thing, there's an interface.txt in the init folder.

Go in and change
[LEAVESCREEN:ESCAPE]
[LEAVESCREEN_ALL:SHIFT+ESCAPE]

to
[LEAVESCREEN:space]
[LEAVESCREEN_ALL:SHIFT+space]

As far as I'm aware, thats where all the games controls are kept...so you could probably change just about anything in there if you so desired it.  Just be careful, changing it to space does interfere with a few things...nothing that I've ever used much, so it's not much a bother to me, but it could get in your way more.

changes such as in the preparing for embarking, you now add stuff with +/- instead of up or down arrows, navagating menus with the +/- buttons, being able to jump in menus with page up/down removed, etc

using mayday if that matters any

Mayday has his own idea of what the keyboard layout is, and it is not the default.

To change the side menu scrollers, you want the SECONDARY_SELECT up and page up. Rebind those to what you'd like.

I doubt he changed it from his 40d version to the 31 version, but I suppose it is possible? Were you using mayday in 40d?

The changes were actually what you were using, not what .31 uses.
You were using non-standard controls to begin with.

It took me forever and a day to get used to the space thing, and now that it defaults sane ( ;) ) my brain is hardwired to space.  :(
