I know it consumes a ton of processing power while creating the world, I didn't even bother checking it when it was up and running in the world itself... and holy crap. 33% of my CPU, 384K of memory. I suppose you're right, it isn't going to run.

Still, that would have been incredibly awesome.

And I don't live in Russia, I am simply originally from Russia. I'll just stick to playing the game on my desktop. WinXP, 4Gb RAM (I know it doesn't all get used because the memory addresses are reserved for other stuff on 32-bit systems, shush), 2.67 Intel Core 2 Duo, NVidia GeForce 7600GS (although no need for a strong video card here).

If that laptop has a wireless card (or if you can find one that'll work...) you might try DFterm

Well, it's got no USB, no Cat5 port, no CD-Drive. The only good thing is that it does have 2 PCMCIA slots, so if I grab the necessary cards I can "expand" its functionality... but I guess I'll get on that when AP tests are through.

Thanks for all the help :D

It sounds to me like you'd be better off putting it up on eBay in the vintage computing section; if it's in good condition it'll fetch enough to buy a netbook that can run DF tolerably.

This sounds like the best idea...

no USB or LAN port... wow... good luck finding a PCMCIA card...

Ya... 128MB RAM max according to that link. No way DF will run on that. It takes 50MB RAM on my system just to get to the intro screen. And at minimum another 60-100MB RAM during worldgen, increasing further based on how long history gen goes on. Running the game itself raises that up to several hundred.

If it had ME, then you may as well find a way to do a network install of win2k, which is much infinitely more stable.

I've run 2k on a 200mhz 46MB RAM machine in the past.

I know Win2k is stable, that's actually the second operating system I went to (98 and 95 are almost the same)... skipped right over ME in the progression. But since I can't run DF on it anyway, none of this has to do with the forum anymore.

I'll keep that in mind as something to try when I'm bored though.

Thanks a ton everyone.

I realize this is a major necro, but in theory DF could work pretty reasonably under DOS if you use the HX DOS Extender.

Someone try it and give us a trip report!

I remember that when Toady switched to a new compiler a couple releases ago it cut out windows 2000 support. Wouldn't that cut out windows 98 and MSDOS as well or has it not affected the legacy version?

Dwarf Fortress uses SDL for graphics (among many other libraries not available under DOS, of course, but that one stands out.)  There's other reasons too, like memory limitations.  Therefore, no easy DOS version is possible, sadly.

(Well, it's not really that sad, since computers that run DOS are practically antiques.  But you get the idea.)

More to the point, DOS was not written to run on new technology; I'm not sure it could properly interface with modern hard drives or processors. DF is too CPU intensive to run on computers designed to run DOS.

IIRC, dwarf fortress requires at minimum a pentium III or 100% compatible CPU. It will not run on a Pentium II or lower. I just tried it on my p2 laptop and it gives an illegal instruction fault.

DF is EXTREMELY intensive, all I can tell you is to get a new comp or something. I have a HP dv6-2010 (the manufacturer is the same as yours, heh) and it runs quite fine (though I haven't gotten too far over 40 units in the past few months, especially since I play adventurer), if I use small worlds and I embark on something like a 3x3 (or something like that) area. Anything larger than those causes SOME lag... I doubt that computer could run a 2x2 region for too long (if at all)

+As previously stated, DOS is not supported, though judging by the fact that it's ASCII, it MIGHT be possible to port it over (with some basic features, no world generation, worse AI... etc.)
