Something I learned early on-

Smoothing stone nets you some nice created wealth, which gives you a lot of migrants. I now avoid doing it til later.

I've had forts with ridiculous pop explosions. My reason? The underground inhabitants of various degrees of spoilage had loads of items. It makes a difference in the early game, and also means you likely won't get more migrants for a solid year after the initial rush.

Didn't get my first immigration wave until summer year 2! on my most recent fort. went from 7 to 32 dwarves though i'm guessing 25 is the max immigration number.

This always happens to me, but the way I see it, the "explosion" is just the way we perceive it... stay with me here.

Most of the waves are pretty much the same size, except a few starting ones. when you have 15-20 dwarves and you get a 20 dwarf wave, it doubles your pop and we think "omg that's alot of dwarves".

The first 20 dwarf wave will boost your pop %100. The next one will send it up %50, and the next %33, %25, %20, %16.5, %14.2, %12.5, %11.1, %10... etc.

see what I mean?

Set your population cap to something low.  20 or so.

Then just slowly increase it as you want more dwarves.  Solves the problem.
