Okay, now I'm really suspicious of these elves...
« on: April 24, 2010, 10:08:40 am »

I had an ambush of goblin macemen pop up right before my second spring.  Naturally I couldn't take care of them, so I locked up the doors and started forging armor and training up some siege operators (and building a hospital) to take them on.

Then the elven traders showed up.  I was resigned to picking up thousands of dwarfbucks worth of untradeable wooden rubbish, as the squad of 4 or 5 goblin macemen was blocking the tunnel directly between the traders and the depot.

I then went down to supervise my woodcutter who were gathering wood in the caverns, and had them kill a few naked mole dogs.  Coming back up...I see elves in the depot happily unloading their wares, and nary a goblin, corpse, or trace of blood in sight.

Now I've heard of elves eating people, but this is ridiculous.  :o

Gobbo 3: I DON'T WANT TO BE A PASTRY!
All the goblins:  :'(
Elves: Peace and harmony be with you!
Dwarves: What the hell just happened?

I think the biggest reason Elves and Dwarves fight is over what should be done with the corpses of their enemies.
Elves: We should eat them!
Dwarves: No! That's disgusting! We should make art objects out of them!

What do you really need to turn Elves into Dwarves? Mutation could make them grow a beard; insanity effects could make them evil-minded, aggressive, tree-hating cave dwellers, and instant, full necrosis of their lower legs could make them short.

The gobbos most likely just so happened to end their attack and go home at the same time as the elves closing on the depot.

But the elves eating them... that would be interesting.

On a somewhat related note, I advise all of you to mod elves to bring caravan guards. Since doing this I've witnessed an elven archer take on a dragon single-handed to buy time for her caravan to escape, being burned to death in the process, and an elven maceman clobber five goblins in a row only to fall to a crossbow bolt seconds before my best squad of axedwarves arrived.
The might have a few funny ideas, but those pointy-eared buggers are as hard as nails when they need to be.

I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

Judging by the number of elves I've slaughtered in adventure mode, this magic must only work on Goblins.

Nothing there.

I guess that's the only reasonable answer...

No one in your fortress knows what happened, why would there be a combat report? :P
