How do I kill a swimming titan? [Mild Spoilers]
« on: April 24, 2010, 12:51:54 am »

So this titan just came to my fort:

He made a b-line strait to the river, and has been taking a nice long bath since. Initially I had all my dwarves head indoors, but he didn't seem to pose a threat, so I've opened the gates again. So far he hasn't killed anyone, or done much of anything for that matter. Should I send the military to kill him or let him live in peace? Can I even kill him (marksdwarves maybe?)?

Titans from good biomes are benevolent. That could be what you're seeing here.

Being made of steam, there's no way you'll be able to kill him. I'd build some sort of edifice around him.

Made of steam huh? Since it probably has no body cable of being wounded, it's unlikely conventional methods will work. That's not to say there is no solution, though.

Magma is the cause of and solution to all of a Dwarf's problems.

Here's the save file for anyone who want's to take a stab at him: http://rapidshare.com/files/379475292/DF2010.rar.html
You have at least 10 axedwarves at your disposal, a few of them being Legendary or Grand Master.

Actually steam things seem to die pretty easy. At least the steam - redacted - from the - removed - do.

You'll get a nice bit of obsidian out of it too, if you like.

Even though something made out of hot water vapor bathing itself in a river makes no sense whatsoever.  Make it a summer house if it's friendly, it'll fight off sieges for you, you can collect the loot, and when it's nothing but dismembered/mangled body parts, it'll distract any enemies until you reach it and give it a proper dwarven burial (that is, leave the magma pumps on overnight inside the summer house).

While the save is nice and all, I think the result is probably predictable: eternal battle or a lucky "decapitation" (for a spider, ugh D:) that ends it in a couple moments.  Anything that doesn't have blood can't bleed it, it must have its spine severed or brain destroyed.  Anything without a brain must have its spine severed.  Anything without an actual spine must have its "head" removed from its "body".  Any single masses with a head and body as one being are effectively immortal.

Until you get magma or bridges involved.

You know, I once believed in the "Good" megabeast. Once upon a time a megabeast called Rotik Nonshutfak came and decided to visit my fort. He made a beeline for the southwest tombs and sat there until he was disturbed. I tried everything, but I could not get my wimpy dwarves to go anywhere near them, and on the odd occasion I did they were ripped to pieces.
And then came the tantrum Spiral....

Best just ignore The Tarantula.

It says "uninvited guest", which leads me to believe he's hostile. Is there a way I can trick him into coming out of the water? I have a bunch of goblins he can play with...

I should correct myself, certain materials do seems to be extremely brittle in extremely specific circumstances, and I don't know exactly what the differences would be.  Your steam tarantula...

If he's hostile, the only way to get him out would be to lure him.  I don't think they get hungry or thirsty so you'd have to entice him with bloodlust.  On the bright side, if he's friendly, he'll help your dwarf fight the goblins off or meet the fate detailed above.  If the goblins die, your dwarves win.  If the beast dies, your dwarves probably win.  If the goblins and beast are locked in eternal strife, then peace has come to the world at last, until you piss off the humans.

They aren't made of steam, they're just full of it.

I've tried getting my dwarves to go pet him but he hasen't tried to attack them. Military can't hit him with their axes. He just seems content to chill there. No carps in my river sadly, just the occasional turtle or lungfish. I'm going to attempt to reroute it so that when goblins come, I lift the main bridge and they have to walk past it, resulting in one of the things mentioned above :P

Edit: Managed to get him to come out my sending my miners to dig next to him with the military backing them up :P He pretty much burst into a giant cloud of steam as soon as he was hit.

Is it actually under the water, and not like sitting on top of a brook? Do you think it may be a water breather?

Personally, I'd engineer a collapse and crush him.

How I'd do it involves diverting the river underground to where you can drop a ceiling on him. Once that's done, it's all dammed up (If you did it right) and you don't need to worry about flooding. For it to work that way, you need the river at least 3 tiles below the surface (Z-1 is the dropper, z-2, empty space with floor, and the support, z-3 river with Titan).

I have yet to encounter anything a well engineered collapse could not kill.
