PNGs are excellent for things like DF screenshots that only have like 16 colors in them, but I've been chewed out on a few occasions for posting "giant" PNGs by people on 56k connections  :P
Twits, a jpeg would be bigger for that.  :p  Convert them to indexed color for even further space saving.
Yep. .gif's, for example, are perfect for DF screenshots.
gif and png use very similar compression methods except png's slightly better, so wherever you can use a GIF, you can also use a PNG.  Your test shows gif as having better compression because gifs are always indexed color.

I have no idea what an elk bird would look like  :o

Call me crazy, but I'd rather see something weird like an elk bird :D

Well i think there are some naked monsters too, so best of both worlds.

I tried to imagine elk birds as birds with elk horns and failed 'cause that just seems silly to me.  Now I'm thinking something like the bladderhorn and that seems less stupid.  Way beyond my artistic ability though.

darn, it's inedible

...is it atleast...brewable?

It's not actually toxic.  It's only inedible because of the bitter taste.  If you can get past that, though, go for it.

So it looks completely disgusting, it tastes like crap, and has a rather explosive and sticky way of delivering it's spores, but it is edible.
IT MUST BE EATEN.

True, but at a certain velocity the resulting explosion expels invader-bits at fatal speeds. You don't want to be dropping trogdolyte-shaped shrapnel bombs into your boneworks.

Also, I just tried an experiment: With that plump helmet picture I made, I saved it as a .png, a .jpg, an uncompressed .tif, a jpeg compressed .tif, a .tga, and a .gif.

Image quality results:
Code: [Select]
.png  .jpg  un. .tif  jpeg .tif  .tga   .gif
High  Lower   High      Lowest  Highest  Low

Compressed file size:
Code: [Select]
.xcf (control) .png     .jpg     un. .tif  jpeg .tif  .tga    .gif
    122 kb    48.7 kb   6.01 kb    479 kb     14.3 kb  146 kb  23.7 kb

So yeah, if you want a fast loading image, .jpg's are your best bet. If you want good quality with a medium loading time, .png's are the best. However, if you don't mind only having 256 colors to work with (255 if it's transparent), .gif's are better in quality than .jpg's and don't have much higher of a compression-to-quality ratio.

I tried compressing that image of yours with Paint.net as 8-bit png and gif (7 dithering setting), and the quality is actually pretty good (until you zoom in and see that it's dithered), with png being 21.6 kB and gif being 21.3 kB. The png came to 19.6 kB after running it through an optimiser. JPEG I can vary between a pretty awful-looking 5.7kB at 75% and a near-perfect image the same size as the 8-bit images at 99%. I also got a 44 kB 24-bit png (post-optimising).

So for lossless compression of 8-bit images, optimised png wins. For lossless compression of full-colour images, optimised png wins again. For lossy compression (of an image with lots of gradients), jpeg wins hands-down.

It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

I like it, but it's hard to get an idea of the scale of the thing.

I imagine it's a little smaller than that in terms of diameter; pizzas tend not to extend very far into the third dimension (unless this is a very deep dish pizza), whereas a plump helmet is another story.

it's probably a bit bigger than a large grapefruit but smaller than an average muskmelon, but not by much.
