I just fell 54 z levels and lived
« on: April 23, 2010, 06:58:47 pm »

I was playing as an adventurer, trying to get to my abandoned fortress that contained the only steel weapons I could remember. For this reason I went through the vast, processor killing fogs of the frozen southern ocean. As I went I saw these weird perfectly rectangular ice walled structures. I saw tiles that looked different than the ice walled structures, and (stupidly) thought they were doors. so I ALT moved into one and

..fell 54 z levels.
I managed to only bruise my left leg too

as it turns out the last 25 z levels were water, which is probably why I survived.

What I want to know is the farthest you can fall and still survive

You're listed as drowning. I think celebrations of your aliveness are a bit premature. :)

But still, that's gotta be a record.

Like Gandalf, you have fallen into the deep recesses below the world where primordial creatures roam. Maybe you'll find a giant stairway out from there to the tallest mountain?

Death can occur at as few as 2 z-levels. Water helps a lot with the impact. Maybe your armor did as well?

Basically you can fall any amount of Z levels this way I think.
7/7 water tiles on your way slowed your movement so you began to fall again. But still I'm quite surprized that it's just the leg.

But still, that's gotta be a record.

I swam back to the top and stopped drowning briefly.
After about half an hour (realtime) of processor chugging through the foggy recesses of the crevass I fell an additional
21 z levels through either a cliff made of water or an unflowing waterfall and promptly drowned :'(
it would have been cool to run into some aquatic forgotten beast. but I think it was just a glitch from the ocean freezing
for some reason or other the weather was listed as warm even though I was on the border of an ocean that was frozen solid.

You should have modded the raws so you wouldnt drown.
Then make an adventure log on what you see...

How do I do that?
The crevass things were everywhere in the frozen sea pass
I could probably jump down another now that I know that they are pits instead of doors.

50 something leagues under the sea
Humans most certainly were creatures of great ambition. No humans had greater ambition than the Isdipop family.
Their passion above all else was making huge journeys to jump down cracks in the ice FOR SCIENCE.
It was on his twelfth birthday that Ashab Isdipop inherited the map from his home in <closest non-goblin civilization>
to <frozen sea what where there be ice cracks>
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
after an extremely uneventful travel to the edge of the sea, as the sea, even frozen, cannot be traveled over. and began
his journey in the Abyssal blizzards which had fog thicker than a dwarfs beard and twice as persistent.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
blindly stumbling his way through the fog in which one could not identify their outstretched hand he came across famous glacial zero gravity ice and screwed around on it
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
continuing his journey he wandered further into the ice-flows that were once The Faint Seas and
came across the strange monoliths of ice where the crevasses were said to be
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
suffice to say, that one didn't have a crevasse in it and my processor exploded afterwards so now the character will be
Irum Isdipop.
So , anyhow Irum found one with a crevasse in it, it looked kind of like a door to a goblin tower.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
And!...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
well I reload a couple more times and I think on the third try I came up with this one
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
first try Irum swims to the top to stop drowning and winds up looking down a narrow corridor
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I cannot say in words how difficult it was to tell whether or not Irum was moving through this tunnel due to DF's graphics when I emerged I was at an opening very similar to the one I came in through except now Irum was Drowning
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I continued in the direction and found no indication that there was anything but an expanse of open sea ahead of me then Irum died because he likes air or something.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
next try.
Irum swims to the top to avoid drowning, but goes in the opposite direction to last time.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Immediately after leaving the auspices of the crevasse, Irum began drowning. this is most likely due to there being a z level of ice above him preventing him from getting his precious air.
The ice wall the crevasse is in seems to trace the border of the ice chunk from the surface that I entered from.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
there's probably some connection between them
Irum was resurrected for one more trip. This time he went down the downward slopes near where he fell instead of swimming up to get his precious air
The exploration went predictably and without fiend-krakens dwelling beneath the ice sheets thirsty for human blood.  :-\
there was white sand and ore
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
like the stuff you would imagine would be on the bottom of the procedurally generated ocean
I had explored down a few more z levels and found another giant ice block when Irum threw a hissy fit about not having any of his fancy-pants air and killed himself.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
What have we learned from this expedition
  • Fog is equivalent to blindness
  • Weak pathetic humans need to breathe
  • There appears to be nothing on the sea floor
If anyone wants to  try out exploring as Irum at the bottom of the crevasse, the save is here

Add the [AMPHIBIOUS] and [NOBREATH] tags to humans next time you-

Wait, someone do that, then EXPLORE THE OCEAN FLOOOOOOOOOOOR.

I made humans amphibious
they never told me about [NOBREATH]  :-X

I could totally plumb the ocean depths later.
but not in the friggin faint seas, can't see crap there.

Add that tag that lets you see with no eyes.

Those are just frozen ocean shore holes. They wont lead to anything you wont find in a not frozen ocean I think, it's just harder to get around.
