Game not opening at all??

Having a problem with just running the game.

I download it from the site, unzip the folder in my documents, and click on the exe. file.

Says that its missing the index file in the data folder.

So then I move the index file into the data folder, and try again.

Then it says it wants to either run in windowed or full screen and I can pick by pressing f11 or something. I click yes, the game opens up, and there is nothing but a black screen. Cant do anything, it wont even close. Whats the problem??

What version?
Have you updated your video drivers recently?
Can you run in Windowed Mode (Select no at start up)

I believe its  the newest version.

And I tried that but same thing. Cant close it, nothing happens.

I repeat, have you updated your video card drivers recently?

If you disable intro and sound in the init file does it work then?

video card drivers are all updated.

currently downloading this alt one, but college connection sucks heh.

How would I disable those two things? Sorry I'm new to all this.

Open the data\init\init.txt file and there are some settings. Each should have an explanation with it, but basically you should try changing the SOUND and INTRO fields to OFF.

That file should be in the data folder to begin with. Where did it wind up after you extracted the game?

Well I made a folder for Dwarf Fortress and extracted everything into that. The data folder only had two other folders in it, one called movies and the other called save.

Sounds like you have an incomplete download there... there should be about 10 folders in the data folder. You should probably try downloading a fresh copy.

Seconding what TotalPigeon said.  Also, if you're on Vista or Windows 7, don't install the game in Program Files.

yeah I have been downloading it from there. tried all three mirrors same problem.

Should the files be all over the place in the folder? Because when I try to boot up the game, the "index file missing from data folder" pops up. But at first the data folder isnt there at all. Once that error message pops up the data folder pops up. Then there are only two folders inside of that one.

Are you sure you're unzipping the game correctly?  If you look inside the zip file, before unzipping it, what are the contents of the "data" folder?
