Embarking in freezing tundra with volcano. What do I need?
« on: April 23, 2010, 01:44:09 pm »

Title says it all. There are no trees, so a woodcutter won't come in handy. What skills and equipment should I get?

Nothing.  At least if it were me.  I always go underground, so how hot or cold it is outside doesn't have much effect on my fort.  If you're playing 2010 though, a woodcutter is still very much needed.

EDIT:  in 40d I would have brought some extra wood just for making beds, but again, in 2010 the surface doesn't change much.

A woodcutter will come in handy when you open up the caverns.

Now, other than that, bring along some wood. Traders won't bring much of it in the first year or two and you're going to need it for barrels and beds and maybe bins.

Depending on how aggressively you colonize the caverns, you may want 50-100 logs and an ample supply of booze, food, or livestock.

Make sure to bring an anvil or two and set up your forges early. With the copious amount of ore now found in maps, I'd suggest making bins and barrels out of metal primarily to conserve wood.

I never embark with a woodcutter.  The skill is easy enough to raise.  The skill doesn't effect value of the logs, just the logging speed.  You can give any friendless peasent an axe and have him go chop down trees.  That way when he is ambushed you loose nothing.

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

That's a good point, since there seems to be a glitch where everything can be made from 1 bar.

Love forcing my dwarves to lug around uncomfortably heavy metal barrels. Quick question on that point: does the weight of a hauled item affect move speed currently?

Unfortunately my recommendation is to not embark on a frozen tundra, for one simple reason-

No access to shells.

I've come to believe that you cannot fish in frozen areas, even if you open the caverns and it says "there's fish" there (I can see the little bastards too), it'll still say "There are no fish in the caverns". Without access to fish/turtles from a pond, you're going to end up missing out on a fair number of artifacts, plus the possible tantrum spiral.

Of course, if you want to have !!FUN!!, disregard this post ^^

So there's that, as well. It looks like the only chronic problems that water can't cure are nausea and cave spider bites.
Which, coincidentally enough, can be cured by magma.

Yep. get them to haul a gold bin full of gold bars and you'll see.

Yes. Clearly a bug that ought to be fixed in the future, but exploit it in the meantime.

Balls.

A *real* dwarf would embark on a glacier or nothing.

What do you really need to turn Elves into Dwarves? Mutation could make them grow a beard; insanity effects could make them evil-minded, aggressive, tree-hating cave dwellers, and instant, full necrosis of their lower legs could make them short.

No access to shells.

Traders do carry turtles.

Traders do carry turtles.

Prepared fishies don't yield shells.

The cave lobsters in the caverns, though...
