Visual Fortress Z Level help
« on: April 23, 2010, 01:27:08 pm »

So I'm running Visual Fortress v0.802 and I want to find out where a magma pool is located on my map. The thing is, Visual Fortress won't let me take a look deeper into the ground, even with "Show Hidden Tiles" checked. I think it may because there's a high mountain peak on my map and that Visual Fortress only renders so many levels, but I really want to know without demolishing a portion of the mountain to do it...
Basically, is there a way to increase the number of z levels that Visual Fortress will render?

Visual Fortress is weird in that it only show hidden tiles around 10-20 tiles form exposed tiles. What you need to do is ethier drill semi-deep holes periodically from the surface or dig a ring around 10-20 z-levels down around the perimeter of the map. That should help Visual Fortress expose it.

I'm not entirely sure this will help, but it's worth a shot - try using reveal on your map first. You'll find it in the Utilities page of the wiki.

I'm pretty sure that blocks (as in, 48x48 tile areas, like the ones corresponding to local tiles on the embark screen) aren't loaded into memory until something happens that makes them load into memory. If the tiles aren't loaded into DF's memory, VF can't read them out of DF's memory, so you've got to force DF to load them to memory. The easiest way to do this is to simply designate the entire lowest z-level for digging; this forces those tiles, and everything above them, into memory. This is, incidentally, why Reveal asks you do designate the whole bottom z-level; it, too, needs to have all the tiles loaded into memory or it'll only reveal the blocks that features are in or that you've dug into.

Wow thanks guys, your advice helped a lot.

Also, does anyone know if it is possible to start a one dwarf game? Like a Dwarf Against the World sort of thing?

Strangest thing-I go down to the lowest level to designate it all for digging and I'm immediately confronted with a level that is -23 z levels surrounded by -15 ones. I think I know where my magma pool is...

Given the right circumstances you could certainly manage it. Probably could make burrows with no food/drink for 6, and then make sure to set population cap.

There's a bug right now that you will get migrants even when pop cap is set, and you will continue getting them until some time later. I can't remember the details, but I think they'll stop once the dwarven caravan reaches the mountainhome?

Visual Fortress works with 2010 now?

Yes. Clearly a bug that ought to be fixed in the future, but exploit it in the meantime.
