Down is the new Right!
« on: April 23, 2010, 09:30:14 am »

I was boring my main vertical shaft the other day when I had an Ender's Game moment and the whole field of play seemed to rotate in my head.  It hit me like a +rubber wood training hammer+ : The enemy's gate is down!  For everyone who played the old 2D version, does tunneling downward in DF2010 remind you of tunneling off to the right in DF2D?  The new caverns line up pretty nicely with the old cave river (great for farming and early irrigation) and the old chasm (nasty stuff in there).  The magma sea is right where a 2D player would expect the magma river.  And beyond that, well... there's FUN!

Anyone else find themselves building fortresses in 3-D that line up with the old 2-D flow as well?

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing.

The underground features were such a huge and frankly delightful part of the game.
I feel like all the 3D stuff up until now have really lacked the elements that made stories like Boatmurdered great.

DF 0.31, to me, is a revival of the good old days. In a very very good way.

I never played the 2D version, so this thread is an interesting insight into that game for me.  It shouldn't surprise anyone that Tarn constructed his 3D world in a pattern consistent with his 2D world.  It is pretty clearly the way he envisions the planet and I think the progression is quite sensible.   :)

Yeah, while I don't like all the new changes, 3.0 is MUCH more of a harken back to 2.0. Down is defiantly the new "right"

one of the things that made original Dwarf so "fun" was that you KNEW you would always hit that river, you KNEW you would always hit the magma, and you KNEW you would always hit the 'fun stuff' at the very end.

Dwarf 2.0 became more 'stable' as far as playing, but in some ways it got dull due to having to "hunt" for those features... Magma, Underground water, "Fun things"  You could embark on map after map and find maybe one of these aspects, and often none of them.

For most Dwarf 3.0 is welcomed because now we know we can embark ANYWHERE at ANY location and stil lget everything from Dwarf 1.0.

The current version of Dwarf (Fortress) is 0.31(.03), not 3.0. Similarly, the previous version is 0.28(.181.40d), not 2.0, and the last 2d version was 0.23(.130.23a), not 1.0. Dwarf Fortress 1.0 is not coming for a long time.

Orientation is a wonderful thing, is it not?  Of course, I've always known that the enemy's gate is down, hence why most of my forts are essentially gigantic underground towers.

Version numbering is all a matter of perspective. If you assign them numbers based on their main features instead of how far the game is from "completion", then the first stable 2D version is indeed "1.0", while the first stable 3D version is "2.0" (and 40d is likely 2.5 or something) and this new version is "3.0" because it changes gameplay so fundamentally.

Version numbering is all a matter of perspective.
Except for the fact that it's, you know, NOT.
Toady assigns the version numbers.
Not us.
The newest version is 0.31.03.

What stops anyone from calling it 3.0 as long as the context makes it clear what they are referring to, though?

If only vertical digging and movement was slowed down in relation to horizontal digging and movement, we'd have a perfect recreation of DF2D's depth.

oh man, I'm getting secondary revelation from your post.  I've never even played the 2D version and I totally see what you're getting at!  All of DF did a 90 degree turn in my head and I suddenly had vertigo.

So when is Boatmurdered and Copperblazes going to be remade in 0.31.03? :D (reread Boatmurdered the other night, and kept waking the dead I was laughing so hard. One day, I'm going to buy a printer and some cartridges, just to print out the best DF stories like BM, CB, etc... I know of three completed, and one still ongoing that'll get their own bindings. )
